“Hold on,” Lia said. “I need to tell Charles what the cops said.”

“And I better call Damon,” Ariana said.

“Meet me at my house,” Rita said. “I’ll drive.”

Lia ran up the stairs and Rita went outside.

Ari took a deep breath before calling Damon.

“Do you need me to come home?” he answered.

“How’d you know?”

“Both detectives have left me messages.”

“More bodies were found.”

“At our place?” he said.

“And on the other side of the Gillon’s.”

“What? For real?”

“I don’t know anything other than that they found a body over there.”

He sighed. “I’m sorry you’re dealing with all of this on your own. I really thought putting distance between us would help.”

“You’re not cursed,” she said. “There’s another killer on the loose. We might’ve bought his house.”

“I’ll be home as soon as I can. I’m likely to hit some rush hour traffic.”

“It’s fine. The detectives kept saying they didn’t want us leaving town.”

“You didn’t tell them—?”

“Of course not.”

“I didn’t think you would. Again, I’m sorry. It was really poor timing on my part. Obviously it didn’t help.”

“Don’t worry about it,” she said. “The girls and I are going to the bar and grill. So if I’m not here when you get back, that’s where I’ll be. If we go anywhere else, I’ll let you know.”

“Do whatever you need to. I’ll let you know when I’m back. Sound good?”

“Sounds perfect. Thanks, Damon.”

“You ready?” Lia said from behind.

“Yeah. Hold on.” Ariana said goodbye to Damon, and she went across the street with Lia.

Rita wasn’t at her car yet.

“Did you know she’s getting kittens?” Ari asked.

“Rita?”

“Yeah. She’s turning Boone’s office into a cat oasis.”

“She can’t do that!”
