ChapterThree

Damon gritted his teeth and considered his wording as he stared down the burly detective on the other side of the table.

Detective Kamada didn’t blink. Flexed his trunk-like arms. “Well?”

“I don’t know anything about the body,” Damon said.

“Body?”

“Remains,” Damon corrected himself. “Is that what you’d prefer I call it?”

Kamada’s brows twitched. “Don’t play with me.”

“I’m not.”

“Then answer my question.”

“Your question?” Damon said. “You said, and I quote, ‘body?’”

“Tell me what you know.”

“I did. All I know about the remains is what Jerry the foreman told me. They were digging up the foundation to build our new house when they came across the body. I don’t even know where they found it. My wife and I were out to lunch with our friend Rita at her bar and grill at the time. We haven’t even been home because we came straight here.”

“That’s the story you’re sticking with?”

Damon drew in a deep breath. “That is the truth.”

“The remains are recent. Both of them.”

“Both? There’s more than one?”

The detective nodded.

Damon’s stomach churned acid. “Did you see them yourself?”

Kamada cracked his knuckles. “I’ll be the one asking questions.”

Hopefully the other detective wasn’t giving Ariana this hard of a time.

“Have you looked into Boone Walker?” Damon asked.

“I just said—”

“You’ll do the questioning, I know,” Damon said. “But Boone’s a much more likely suspect than Ariana or me. He’s lived in the neighborhood longer, and he’s an actual criminal.”

“I shouldn’t consider the son of Cal Jones, the notorious serial killer?”

Damon’s stomach dropped to the floor. The detective was actually going there. “Am I under arrest?”

“You know you’re not.”

“So, I’m free to leave?”

“It would be more helpful if you stayed. You would look more cooperative.”

Damon gritted his teeth. “Look, I get that you have questions, but I’ve done nothing wrong. My father has nothing to do with this. Ariana and I have lived on that property less than two years. Multiple neighbors have told us the previous owners sold and ran off in a hurry, surprising a lot of people. They’re far more suspicious than we are. Why did they leave so suddenly?”

“Do you have their information?” asked Kamada.
