ChapterTwenty-Five

“What did she say?” Ariana turned onto the freeway.

“I just left a voicemail.” Maya sighed. “I hope the detectives take us seriously. I know that was Ryan’s car. But if they want proof, I can’t give it to them.”

“Not yet.”

“Meaning?”

“You’re their nanny, right?” Ariana asked.

“I see what you’re getting at. I should look around for proof.”

“Exactly. Leave it to me to dig deeper into paperwork. Between the two of us, we’ll find what that guy is hiding.”

“All I want is to find Olivia before he—” Maya’s voice cracked and she cleared her throat. “I don’t know what I’d do if she … if she wasn’t in my life anymore.”

“We’ll find her.”

“You sure you aren’t a detective?”

“I don’t want to be, but given my dad’s job I can’t help thinking like that.”

Maya sniffled. “You might want to think about it.”

“No. Damon and I are happy teaching people before they get into situations like this. If it weren’t for you walking down my street, I wouldn’t have any clue about your sister.”

“I’m glad you’re here. It’s been hard doing all the searching on my own.”

“Oh, I get it. I’ve dealt with more than my fair share of abductions.”

“Ever thought of being a private investigator?” Maya asked.

Ari laughed. “Why are you so determined to get me to switch careers?”

“You’re so good at this. Not only do you have the knowledge and resources, but you care. That’s the most important.”

“Like I said—”

“You want to focus on preventing this type of thing. I get it. But you could do both.”

“It might be something to think about,” Ariana said. “Let’s focus on Olivia for now. Why don’t you tell me more about your sister? Who knows what detail might help lead us to her?”

The rest of the drive home, Maya shared stories about her twin. Sometimes she laughed a little and other times she sniffled.

Nothing jumped out to Ari that could be a clue to finding the woman. But maybe something would come in handy later.

When she pulled up to the Gillon’s house, Rita stood outside talking with Lia and Charles.

Ariana’s breath caught seeing Charles back. Lia must be so happy.

She and Maya scrambled out of the car and caught the others up on everything. Damon pulled in behind Ariana’s car and joined them.

As they all headed toward the houses, Ariana turned to Maya. “Where are you staying?”

“I’ll find a hotel. That’s what I’ve been doing all week.”

“Nonsense,” Rita said. “You’ll stay with me.”
