ChapterTwenty-Seven

Ariana reached for her hair dryer but stopped.

Ten new texts and five missed calls.

She unlocked the phone to see who they were from. Rita and Lia, except one text from Maya. From the looks of it, Maya’s text had started it all.

Her text was only one word, but it said enough to send a chill down Ariana’s spine.

Maya: 911

She called Maya back.

Voicemail.

Then she called Rita.

“Where have you been?” Rita answered.

“In the shower. What’s going on?”

“Maya’s in trouble.”

“Did Ryan hurt her? Take her?”

“We don’t know! She only sent the one — 911.”

“I saw that,” Ariana said. “Have you been to the Kane’s house?”

“No. Let’s go now.”

Ariana looked at her reflection. Dripping hair and a towel wrapped around her. “Give me two minutes to get dressed.”

“I’ll meet you out front.”

“Okay.” Ariana ended the call and hurried to the bedroom.

“What’s the matter?” Damon asked, his eyes wide.

She explained the situation as she grabbed random clothes.

“I’ll tell Charles and Lia.” He raced from the room before she could tell him that Lia already knew.

Ariana got dressed, ran her brush through her hair, and raced downstairs.

Everyone was in the entry talking over each other.

“We need to get to the Kane’s,” Ariana said.

Damon pulled out his phone. “I’m going to make some calls while you talk to his wife. If he owns property out there, I’m going to find the address.” He raced toward the living room.

Ariana headed out the front door. “I’m going with Rita to the Kane’s house.”

“So am I.” Lia hurried after her.

Rita, in her running car, waved them over.

Before Ari and Lia even closed their doors, Rita hit the gas, making the tires squeal.
