Ariana shined the light in Ryan’s face. “Move away from the door!”

He cackled. “I can’t believe I have three lovelies at once. It was why I let you follow me out here, you know. I knew you would come and try to save them yourself.”

“What? You don’t have any of us.” Ari dug through her pockets until she found what she was looking for. She pulled it out. Inched toward him.

“I have you exactly where I want you.” A slow smile spread across his face. “This is a dream come true.”

“Is that what you think?” Ariana readied herself, keeping the light in his eyes.

“Yes. And I’m going to shine that in your face soon enough. See how you like it.”

“Sounds like fun.”

A confused expression crossed his face.

She took two large steps. Aimed for his arrogant eyes. Pressed the nozzle.

Pepper gel sprayed out.

He screamed like a little girl, clawing at his eyes and kicking the air.

Ariana spun around and pulled Olivia toward the door. She shoved Ryan out of the way, and they raced down the hall. Through the maze of storage in the main part of the basement. Up the noisy stairs.

She almost ran into the door. She hadn’t closed it. Ryan had to have done it.

Something crashed near the bottom of the stairs. “You’re going to pay!” Ryan shouted.

“Hurry,” Olivia pleaded.

“I have more of that spray,” Ari called down to him. “Are you thirsty for more?”

The knob wouldn’t budge. She fought with the lock. It twisted. The knob turned. She opened the door.

Olivia covered her eyes in the light of the kitchen. She’d probably been in darkness the whole time she’d been here.

Ariana helped her through the house. Stopped dead in the living room.

Rita lay next to the couch, her eyes closed.

“No!” Ariana raced over. Checked her pulse.

It was strong.

Ari led Olivia outside. “Tell my friends outside that Rita needs help in here. I’m going to look for Maya upstairs.”

“You think she’s there?”

“There was a light on earlier. I have to check. Go. The police should be on the way and my friends will help you.”

Olivia nodded and sniffled. “Just find Maya.”

“I will.” Ariana spun around. “Don’t forget about Rita.”

Loud footsteps sounded from behind.

Ryan sauntered toward her, his eyes red and gushing water.

Ari held up the spray can.
