He looked so startled that I laughed some more. And finally, the corners of his mouth quivered upward. “You’re the stupid one,” he said. “I could have killed you before I thought about it.”

“Maybe you’re not that kind of wolf,” I teased. “Why not talk to Perdita? She can help us figure it out.”

He shrugged, but that wasn't a no.

A car beeped to my right, making us both flinch. Groaning, I recognised the driver immediately. Jorge got out of the car and looked us both over.

“Seriously?” he said. “Are you two looking for trouble?”

“Just checking up on things,” I said.

“Making sure everyone’s doing their job,” Victor added.

“This is my job tonight. Are you two saying I can’t be trusted to do my job?”

I held up my hands. “That’s not it. We felt useless sitting at home.”

“And so you two decided to disobey your alpha.” Jorge’s mouth was a thin line, but his eyes were smiling.

“We were trying to help,” I said in a small voice, unsure how things were going to go.

Jorge sighed. “Get in the car. I’ll drive you home, and you can explain yourselves to Byron. Hurry up.”

We reluctantly obeyed. In the car, I sat on my hands to stop fidgeting. Nerves roiled in my stomach. Byron wasn’t going to be pleased.

Jorge must have let him know about us because Byron was waiting at the gates to greet us. He exchanged a few words with Jorge while we sidled up to him, our eyes to the ground. Jorge was quick to leave, slapping me on the shoulder as he passed me.

“Well?” Byron said. “What’s the excuse this time?”

“It was me,” Victor said. “I dragged him out there because I was restless.”

I nudged him. “It was both of us. We needed some peace of mind. It’s hard to sleep on a night like this.”

The rain had stopped, leaving the air smelling fresh and new. The moonlight pooled over us in a way that made my wolf long for a run.

“I know you want to help. I know you need to help,” Byron said sternly. “But you can’t keep running off alone without telling anybody. If you ever happen to run into the harbingers, you need to get Margo here, to the pack, to safety, rather than risk facing the harbingers yourselves.”

“What if we’re surrounded?” Victor asked in a subdued tone.

“Contact us then defend yourselves until we arrive. Run if you can. But only if they attack you in some way. Otherwise, avoid confrontation. We don’t know what they can or will do, so there’s no point being aggressive when this could be resolved in other ways.” His expression grew colder. “We’ll exhaust all avenues, but we’ll do what it takes to keep our family safe. All of us.”

“All this waiting around is making us…” I shook my head. I didn’t even know how to put it into words.

“We all feel the same way,” Byron said. “It’s hard for everyone, but it’ll be harder for Margo if something happens to you. Go to your homes and get some rest. The time has almost come. We need to be strong and alert.”

“Victor’s staying with me tonight,” I blurted.

Victor shot me a quizzical look.

“That’s fine, but no running the streets. I don’t want to have to worry about you two as well.” Byron left us without another word.

I sighed with relief. We had gotten off easy.

“What was that about?” Victor asked.

“Stay at my place. You said you feel calm there, so hang out whenever. Like Byron said. We can do more as a team, and you’re no use to anyone if you’ve used up all your energy snapping at people at home. We need to be ready for anything.”

By the look on Victor’s face, I knew he agreed with me. We would be ready.
