“No, he’s not.” I sighed. “I want to help him, but I don’t know how.”

“Well, inviting him over is a good start,” Perdita said. “We’ll worry about the rest later. I’ll try talk to him.”

“Don’t tell him I said anything!”

She smiled, but I knew she wouldn’t. I trusted her completely, and maybe Victor would learn to do that, too.

CHAPTER13

Margo

Late in the evening,a knock at the door had my mother and me peeking through the living room window before we risked answering.

“It’s Amelia,” I said with relief.

“What does she want now?”

“Mam,” I pleaded. “Can you try to be nice to her?”

She grumbled something under her breath then headed to the front door to answer it.

“It’s pretty late,” she said instead of greeting Amelia.

“Sorry,” Amelia said, unable able to meet her gaze. She held up a bag. “I brought cakes.”

Mam stared at her for a long moment. “I suppose you should come inside then.”

We headed into the kitchen. Mam stuck on the kettle while I observed Amelia. She looked miserable.

“Seriously, are you okay?” I asked.

She shrugged. “Just family stuff.”

Mam served the tea then sat across from Amelia at the table. “Spill.”

Amelia blinked at her. “Excuse me?”

“We have tea. We have cakes. Now, what’s on your mind?”

“Oh.” Amelia bit her lip. “It’s nothing serious.”

“It doesn’t have to be. You need to get something off your chest, so spill.”

“It’s…” Amelia sighed. “My cousin showed up out of the blue with his pregnant mate. He’s Byron’s son, and things get complicated whenever he’s around. My whole family is complicated.”

“Families can be like that,” Mam said. “It’s impossible to always get along.”

“I don’t think we’ve ever gotten along with him. He’s always been weird with us. There’s always some way he’s been hard done by, and it’s always our fault.” She ran her hands over her face. “I shouldn’t vent. I should be grateful. He’s strong, but he’s so exhausting to be around.”

“Vent away,” Mam said. “Better than letting it fester.”

“Why is he here?” I asked.

“For you.” She wrapped her fingers around her cup. “So he says. I mean, he’s not lying or anything, but it always feels like he has an ulterior motive. It’s more like he’s always ready to use an opportunity.”

“Is he the same age as you?” Mam pushed a plate of treats towards her. “Or is there a large age difference?”

“He’s older than Nathan,” Amelia explained. “I’m the youngest in the family. My father and Byron were twins. It’s funny, but when Byron met his soulmate, my father apparently thought she was his. They were all close. My dad met my mother a lot later, but they both died when I was very young.”
