Victor laughed. “He thinks he’s great anyway.”

“It’s going to be miserable putting up with him, but at least he’s strong,” I said. “He’ll come in handy if any trouble starts. And it looks like there will be a baby on the way sooner than expected. His mate is further along than Perdita. So that’ll be interesting.”

“Has there been any news?” Margo asked. “About the harbingers, I mean.”

“Nothing yet,” I said. “Let us know if anything happens here. We have to get back. We promised Nathan we’d help him. He’s trying to keep us occupied all evening.”

After our goodbyes, Victor and I headed back home.

“You should have told her to keep away from Jeremy,” Victor grumbled.

“I don’t want to scare her. Besides, he’s not going to do anything. Byron would freak.”

Still, I had to warn Nathan. That evening, I made up some excuse to go for a walk with him. He didn’t question it, but he was always understanding like that.

“So what’s up?” he asked as we walked.

“Jeremy’s a problem,” I said.

He laughed. “What’s new?”

“No, seriously. He’s acting like he’s the king of the pack, for one. Victor told me he warned him to keep away from our house, and especially Perdita. He made it sound like Jeremy had to take responsibility for Perdita’s health because you weren’t doing a good job of it.”

“What a prick.”

“That’s what I said! Victor wasn’t going to come over anymore. If he hadn’t told me…”

“Now I’m pissed,” Nathan said. “I can take anything he says to me, but picking on a kid winds me up the wrong way.” He sighed. “Now’s not the time. Keep out of his way the best you can, Victor, too, and let me know if he bothers Perdita. Byron has enough on his plate without us going after each other, so let’s focus on protecting the family. That includes Victor.”

A weight lifted off my shoulders. He would deal with it, and he was always on our side. Jeremy could keep looking for attention elsewhere.

CHAPTER15

Margo

At our next drama rehearsal,Tammie pulled me aside. “Listen.” She hesitated, anxiously chewing her gum.

“What is it?”

“Are you sure you want to be getting up on stage right now? I won’t hold it against you if you want to take a step back this time.”

“What?” I opened and closed my mouth while I processed the question. “You want me out? I know I’ve been a little off, but I’ll do better on the night. I swear I will.”

“That’s not it.” She looked me over then heaved a sigh. “I wasn’t sure if I should bring it up, but I heard about what’s going on with you. Your biological family are on a kick to take you home with them, right?”

“Oh, that.” I grimaced. “Yep, that’s about right.”

“I have to ask… I mean, you’re legally adopted, right? Your parents didn’t buy you on the black market or something skeevy like that.”

“I’m definitely legally adopted,” I said. “My parents did nothing wrong. They found me in an orphanage when I was a toddler, so it’s not like my bio family changed their mind after making a mistake.”

She blew out a sigh of relief. “Good. I mean, I thought it was like that, but I had to make sure. So these people are trying to take you back after all of these years? I mean, what are they on? How do we know they’re actually related to you? Do they have proof?”

“They look a lot like me,” I said. “It’s hard to explain, but I’m pretty sure they’re the real deal.”

“Kidnapping's so not the real deal. Are you okay? How are you handling all of this?”

I thought about it. “I was scared at first, but I have a lot of support, so I’m doing much better.”
