“What’s the point of rehearsals when we’re so bad?” Emma said plaintively. “We’re going to make a holy show of ourselves. Even the performing dogs are going to outdo us. It’s embarrassing.”

“It’s not that bad,” I insisted. “I need the distraction anyway.”

“Any more news on the freaky relatives?” Chloe asked.

I looked at Dorian. I had no idea what to say.

“They showed up at my place,” he told her. “Threatened the entire town because Margo refused to go with them. They’re gone for now, but I’m pretty sure they’ll be back, so watch yourselves. Just in case.”

“Creeps,” Emma muttered.

“You poor thing.” Chloe clucked her tongue. “Well, they won’t get near you. Everyone’s talking about it. Have you gone back to the police?”

“Not yet,” I said. “I’m dreading it. They might think we’re full of it. Or they might try to blame Dorian’s family again.”

“That’s so gross,” Emma said. “The cheek of them.”

“It’ll be different this time,” Chloe said with confidence. “I heard that people around town have been making calls to the station about it. You know what? I’ll get my mam to call. And my auntie. We’ll bug them until they pay attention.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Thanks. I’ll try again.”

We chatted together until Mam arrived to pick me up. She brought Dorian and the girls home, too. It was nice being packed into the back seat with the girls and actually managing to keep up with their chatter.

When Mam dropped the girls off, she let out a low whistle. “They’re a friendly pair.”

“Noisy, too,” Dorian muttered from the front seat.

I laughed. “They’re good to me.”

“I’m glad they’re on your side,” Mam said.

We soon reached Dorian’s home.

Before he got out of the car, Dorian turned to me. “I’ll be your witness if you go to the police station. I’ll go with you. I’ll ask Nathan, too, if you want.”

Mam shot him an appreciative look. “That’s so nice of you,” she said. “But the last time we went to the station, they were a bit weird about your family. It might bring problems to your door.”

“We could ask Byron,” he suggested. “Like right now.”

“We can’t impose on him like that,” Mam said, but she hesitated a little, and I knew she badly wanted to impose. “Well, maybe it would help.”

“I’ll get him,” Dorian said enthusiastically. “Wait here.”

He was gone before she could argue.

“He’s so sweet,” Mam said despite herself.

“I’m glad you like him.”

She looked me over and sighed. “It’s getting serious, isn’t it? Be safe, Margo. Promise me that.”

“It’s not that serious,” I said. “Yet.”

“My poor heart.” She pressed her hand over her chest. “Just be sure before you take things further, and come to me with questions beforehand. All right?”

We had always been open about personal issues, but still, my cheeks burned with embarrassment. “Can we not do this right outside his place?” I asked. “It’s too much.”

“Agreed.”
