She could have gone home not knowing he’d loved her once and wasted years of their lives—and her virginity in the process. She could have gone a lifetime without knowing that.

But now she knew the truth. Lucky her! She could share his secret and boost her career. Which she was angry enough to do, but she loved him too much to do that to him. He thought he owed her?

He owed her, all right. He owed her his heart.

But nowhere in his speech had he mentioned his feelings for her in the present. It’d been about his healing as he walked away one more time. Cash was cutting her loose so she could move on with her life. Like she didn’t know her own heart and mind. Like she needed him to tell her how to proceed.

God, she really was an idiot.

He stopped knocking, giving up after a few minutes. She pulled her suitcase from the closet and threw it on the bed. Once he fell asleep, she’d leave. She’d drive as far as she could without falling asleep at the wheel and then rent a room in whatever hotel was closest.

She wasn’t spending another minute in this house with Cash—the man who’d loved her, but not enough to stick around. The man who claimed he wanted her “back for good,” but only as fodder for a hit single. As if their sleeping together for the last two weeks had meant nothing.

She should have known better.

She did know better.

Apparently, that was a lesson she’d needed to be taught more than once.
