“For the first time in my life, I have something real and true to come home to. You are the person I don’t want to miss out on, Wildflower. I have given you every reason I can for you to stay.”

She draws her chin up, my tough girl. But she’s not mine. She never was. I should have known from the start I wouldn’t be able to keep her for myself. I should have known she’d resist being planted in cultivated, stable soil. She was born to do her own thing. She was born to be free. I’ve been telling myself a fairy tale, convincing myself she’d fall in love with the life we were creating and want a piece of it for herself.

“You’re the first woman I ever dated who didn’t want anything from me. Not money, not gifts. You’re also the first woman I’ve offered my heart to, but you don’t want that either, do you?”

The gentleness in her eyes is killing me. She cares about me, I know she does. Just not enough for her to choose me in the end.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you,” she says woodenly. “I understand if you want to change the name of the spa.”

I don’t acknowledge that unbelievably hurtful remark. I grab the bourbon by the neck and the slide the bottle off the counter. “Assuming you won’t be needing this, so I’ll take it off your hands. Good night, Talia.”

I walk out.

She lets me.
