The stadium goes silent as we watch the ball soar through the air. It stays suspended above the field for what feels like forever, and then, as it descends, it lands in the arms of one of our players, resulting in an interception.

“Holy shit! They won!” I scream as my entire crew does the same. I pull Amelia and Charlotte into my chest. Damien, Ethan, Jeffrey, and Nick all scream and start crying, and the entire stadium breaks out into noise that is unlike anything I’ve ever heard.

The Bolts take one final knee to end the game, and then purple-and-yellow confetti falls from the sky, fireworks pop off, and the Bolts players go apeshit on the field.

“I’m going to Maddox!” I scream to my friends who encourage me to leave, so I take the few stairs down to the gate, flashing my access pass that allows me onto the field to the security guard.

Maddox’s eyes are already on me when I spot him, and he lifts me from the ground and holds me tight to his body as soon as I leap into his arms.

I wrap my legs around his waist and then find his lips with my own. “You did it!”

“No,wedid it, Pen. We fucking did it!”

“I didn’t play that game. That was all you, baby. You and the boys! You just fucking won the Super Bowl, Maddox! I’m so proud of you!”

He laughs and kisses me again before gently setting me on the ground. “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you, sweetheart.”

“I’m so grateful I got to be a part of this, baby. This is something you’ll never forget.”

“I know. But I want to make it that much more memorable.” He drops to one knee, and I gasp as I watch him take a ring out of his pants.

“Oh my God! Did you have that in there the entire game?”

He laughs. “No. I had one of the trainers hold on to it for me just in case. But Penelope, I couldn’t think of a more perfect time to ask you to marry me.”

“Maddox...”

Suddenly, the chaos around us goes quiet as I listen to nothing but what he is saying to me at this moment. “Penelope Klein, you are the love of my life. You’re the only woman who has ever made me realize that, without a doubt, the most beautiful things in life are meant to be shared with another person, like sunsets and orgasms. Finding true love is always an unusual circumstance, and that’s how I know what we have is the real thing, because it was one circumstance that led us together.”

Cheers ring out all around us, but all I can hear is him.

“I love your smile, your laugh, and your sass. I love that you can make me feel like the strongest man on the earth because that’s what you need, but you’re not afraid to be the strong one when I need you to be. I love your drive and passion, the way you are with my family. And I want to spend the rest of my life loving you, if you’ll allow me to.” He holds out an emerald cut diamond that sparkles in the stadium lights. “Penelope, will you marry me?”

I nod through my tears. “Yes, Maddox. Yes, I’ll marry you.”

He slides the ring on my finger and then lifts me up, crashing his mouth to mine once more. We stay like that until my friends rush up to us on the field, and that’s when I notice the cameras and reporters huddled around us.

“Oh my God!” Charlotte squeals. “This is one of the craziest things I’ve ever experienced!”

“You’re going to be Mrs. Maddox Taylor!” Jeffrey squeals, jumping up and down. Then he coughs to clear his throat, reaches for Maddox’s hand to shake, and says in a very deep voice, “Congrats, man.”

Maddox laughs. “Thanks, Jeffrey.”

“Let me see the ring!” Amelia shouts, pulling my hand to her. “You did good, Maddox. Thank goodness you had some help, huh?”

“You helped him pick out the ring?”

“Naturally. I wanted to make sure that if the girl who swore off love was going to actually get married, she had a rock I knew she’d never be able to turn down.”

Reaching for her, I hug her close. “Thank you for helping me get here.”

“No, babe. You did that all on your own.”

“I think it was partly because I found the right person.” I turn back to my fiancé.

“And it was the right time,” Maddox says, pulling me into his arms again.

“Yeah, what’s the saying? Timing is everything?”

Maddox nods. “Yup. And now’s the time when you kiss me again.”

THE END
