He chuckled as he turned and reached for my hand, tucking it back into his arm. “I just moved back to this area, and well, life has been a little crazy the last few months. I went to the old museum when I was a kid, though.”

I had a feeling there was a lot more to that story, but now was not the time to irritate him. “Well, then we will have to come back and visit.”

“We?” He looked down at me. Thanks to my heels, our faces weren’t as far away from one another. It also made our lips a lot closer, and I noticed him glance toward mine.

“I love coming to the museum,” I replied and leaned forward slightly to lower my voice, “It could be one of our planned dates. I’ll let Rebecca know to schedule it into your calendar.”

“Our planned dates?”

“Yes. You do remember Milt said we were to appear to be dating to help your image.”

He inhaled sharply and nodded but didn’t reply. A server approached us holding glasses of wine. “Where can I get a Scotch?” Alex asked the server.

“I would be happy to get that for you, sir.” He turned to me, and I retrieved a glass of red wine. He nodded and disappeared immediately.

We stepped a little off to the side, and as I looked around, I started plotting who we needed to speak with and who we could avoid.

“Mya?” A deep voice spoke my name, and I turned, a smile spreading over my lips at the sight of a long-time friend.

“Douglas! How wonderful to see you.”

He leaned forward, kissing both my cheeks and smiling widely at me. “My wife drug me out.”

I glanced over his shoulder asking, “Where is Vicky?”

He turned to scan the area and laughed. “Who knows. I left her the moment we arrived. She’s talking to everyone. I’m looking to have a conversation with Jack Daniels.”

I laughed and felt a hand on my lower back as Alex stepped closer to me and thrust out his hand. “I’m Alex Hoyt, Mya’s date.”

Douglas shook his hand, glancing at me with a curious look in his eye. “Douglas Wiseman, a pleasure to meet you, Alex. Make sure to take care of my Mya. She is a special woman.”

“I will take good care of her,” He stated as he curled his hand possessively around my hip. I almost rolled my eyes but controlled myself. Douglas excused himself shortly after that, and I shifted to put some space between Alex and me, only he wasn’t allowing that.

“Let’s dance.” He said and started to pull me toward the floor in front of the orchestra. Just then, the server arrived with his drink, and Alex threw back the two fingers of Scotch and dropped the glass back on the tray. “Thanks,” he muttered to the server before dragging me away.

I hurriedly found a place to set my wine glass down before we reached the floor, and a few seconds later, Alex was pulling me into his arms. I frowned into his chest momentarily, “In a hurry to dance?”

He pulled me in close to his chest but didn’t reply. For a few moments, he was quiet, and then I heard him inhale and exhale as if he were trying to force himself to relax.

“Sorry about dragging you to the floor.”

I chuckled, trying to lighten the mood. “That’s okay. You could have just told me that you were dying to hold me in your arms. I totally would have run out here and waited for you.”

I got the desired response and felt the vibration of his laugh in his chest as he smiled down at me. “I was dying to hold you in my arms. Ever since I saw you in this dress tonight, Mya, I’ve been dying to have my hands all over you.”

“Oh,” I said breathlessly.

“You’re absolutely stunning, and not just the dress. I’m talking about you.” He ran a finger down my cheek and then curled his finger around a tendril of hair, staring at what he was doing as I watched him. “I didn’t like the way that Douglas looked at you.”

“He’s an old friend.”

“Did you sleep with him?”

“No. Women can be friends with men and not sleep with them.”

He shook his head. “No, they can’t.”

I laughed. “Why do you say that?”
