“My boss wants me to date him to improve his image.”

“Date him, date him, or like just date him for the public eye?”

I laughed. “Well, he did say that I could sleep with him, and he wouldn’t care.”

“Oh, my god! He’s pimping you out?”

“Yeah, in a way, he is. Or at least treating me like an escort. That’s what I’ll be doing tomorrow night. I’m escorting Alex to the charity gala in center city.”

“Is he going to go along with it?”

“I don’t know what he’s going to say. Meredith, this guy is so arrogant. We butted heads a few times today, so I have no clue what is going to happen tomorrow night.”

“Well, it sounds like you are going to need to do everything that you can to make your boss and the client happy.”

I sighed, “I know.”

“If he wants to sleep with you, are you going to?”

“Geez, Mer, I don’t know. I mean, the guy is hot as hell, but you know that I’m all talk when it comes to attractive men. I clam up when I’m around someone I am interested in having a relationship with. I can’t afford to do that with Alex. I have to prove I can do this job.”

“Then keep telling yourself that it’s business. If you get to sleep with Alex, it’s a bonus.”

“I might prefer a new pair of shoes,” I joked.

“Bullshit!” She said with a laugh. “I’ve heard you go on and on about this guy for almost two weeks. Keep your mind set on this is a job, and then you won’t get your heart attached.”

“I’ll try,” I told her, but I wasn’t sure that it would work.

Iwas ready and waiting nervously downstairs. I hoped that Alex was a timely man; I despised people who were late. It showed a lack of respect for the person waiting. I watched Charlie pull up to the curb around the same time that I heard the elevator door slide close.

I turned, expecting to see one of the other tenants, but found Alex standing there in mid-stride. If only I could have snapped a picture of the look on his face. It would have been a moment to treasure because I didn’t think that I had ever seen someone look at me with that much awe and desire.

As fast as I could, I scurried away, telling myself, this was a job, and that is all it was. Alex followed me to the car and waited as I spoke with Charlie.

What I said to Alex in the back of the limo was one hundred percent true. Alex was an incredible artist, but he needed to give more of himself to people. They had to connect him to his artwork. That’s what made a beautiful artist—someone who could touch another with his work through his soul.

Alex might act like he didn’t have much of one, but there was no doubt he had a very vast one. If Alex didn’t feel things as deeply as he did, he could not create this incredible artwork.

Before I had met Alex, I had studied the portfolio he had given us. The person who created those masterpieces was indeed talented. I had been extremely excited to put a face with the name and just as surprised to see that Alex was responsible for such work.

I had seriously misjudged him, but then maybe he misjudged himself. When I had asked him what his why was for doing his art, he had shut down. I didn’t have to be a therapist to know that something painful had transpired in his life, and he used that emotion to create his paintings.

Hopefully, as we got to know one another, Alex would open up a little bit and eventually trust me. Perhaps if I did sleep with him, he might be more willing to have deep, meaningful pillow talk.

It was something to consider.

The two of us remained quiet for the rest of the ride. I figured it wouldn’t hurt for Alex to mull over what I had said. Once we arrived, Charlie bid us a wonderful time and told me to text him when we were ready to be picked up.

Alex gave me his elbow, and I took it without meeting his gaze. This was a job, and while I was supposed to be his date, I wasn’t prepared to become the doting girlfriend just yet.

Inside the museum, I checked my wrap, and then we wandered toward the grand hall where the festivities were taking place.

“I assume you have been to this museum before,” I stated as we passed by one of the wings, and he craned his neck to see what was down there.

“Believe it or not, I have not.”

“What?” I said as my feet stuck to the floor.
