I arrived at the office right on time, and the receptionist smiled brightly at me as I approached the desk. “Good morning, Mr. Hoyt. Rebecca asked me to have you wait in the conference room. She had a last-minute video call she needed to take care of.”

“That’s fine, but is there any way you can direct me to Mya North’s office? I have something I need to give her.”

“Absolutely. It’s the third door on the right down that hallway. I’ll call Mya and let her know you are coming back.”

“Please don’t. I want to surprise her.”

Her smile widened. “Of course.”

I winked at her, saw the immediately blush on her cheeks, and strolled away, heading for the third door on the right. I paused before I stepped around the corner and steadied myself for what might happen when we came face to face. She had every right to lose her mind, scream at me, tell me to get lost, and refuse to work with me again.

I stepped into the doorway and paused. Mya was angled slightly away from me, reading something on her computer, her fingertips resting on her bottom lip. She was beautiful, and for a few seconds, I did nothing more than stare.

She leaned forward to look more closely at the screen and smiled before leaning back. That smile took my breath away, and maybe that made a sound because she suddenly looked my way. Her eyes widened at the sight of me, and she seemed momentarily flustered, but then she cleared her throat and pasted on what I knew was a one hundred percent business smile. “Alex, good morning.”

As she stood, she pushed her laptop closed, and I approached her desk, waiting for the anger to explode. “Good morning, Mya.”

“Did Kristen tell you that Rebecca was on a video conference?”

“She did, but I wanted to bring this to you.” I set a small shopping bag on her desk. She glanced at it, read the label, and began to laugh. “You bought me a phone. Why?”

“Because I’m pretty sure that yours got broken because of me.”

She shook her head and averted her gaze. “You don’t need to buy me a phone, Alex. I am the one that threw it, and it wasn’t even aimed at the door.”

I blinked. How was she remaining so calm? Why wasn’t she giving me grief for how I treated her last night?

I cleared my throat as I shuffled my feet nervously, “I owe you an apology.”

Her gaze slipped to the door and then back to me.

I immediately stepped away from her and closed the door. When I returned to face her across the desk, her chin was up higher in a slightly defensive position. “No, you don’t.”

“Mya, I do. What happened last night—and then for me to just walk out without a word. I was a huge asshole. That’s not me.”

She put her hand up. “Alex, stop. Trust me, I might have been upset right after it happened, but I quickly got over it.” She sat down in her chair, crossing one leg over the other as if this was no huge deal as she smiled. “To be honest, you saved us both a lot of unnecessary small-talk. We had sex. It was great, but really, it’s no big deal.”

No big deal? Holy fuck! Had she not felt what I had?

“Are you serious?” I asked slowly.

She stood again, still smiling as she came around her desk and stopped in front of me, “Yes. I’m completely serious. Look, you and I need to work together. We just have to let that go. Maybe it will help us look more natural pretending to be a couple since we know each other somewhat intimately now.”

“Somewhat intimately? You say that like we played a game of Truth or Dare mixed with Seven Minutes in Heaven.”

She laughed, the sound slightly unnerving to me. “Oh, my God! That’s so funny.” She put her hand on my chest momentarily. “Alex, just know that what happened last night is no big deal. I’m not upset. I’m really not.”

“Okay,” I replied just as a knock sounded on her door. Mya spun away from me and called out to the person to come in.

Rebecca slipped her head. “I’m not interrupting anything, am I?”

“Not at all,” Mya said as she rounded her desk and spoke to me. “Thanks for the replacement phone, but I already have one.” She held up a phone. “In my job, I can’t be without one, and we always keep at least two replacements here at the office in case something like this happens.”

“What happened to your phone?” Rebecca asked as she stepped into the room.

“It took a flight and didn’t land very well,” Mya stated with a laugh.

“I dropped my last one in the toilet. I get it,” Rebecca commented with an accompanying chuckle.

I watched the two women, and then Rebecca said she would grab her things so that we could go. As she walked away, I saw the tension in Mya’s eyes. She peered at me briefly, and I realized something. Mya might be smiling, but that smile wasn’t reaching her eyes. She could say she was alright with what happened last night, but she wasn’t—not by a long shot.

I’m not sure why that thought made me feel better, but it did.

Rebecca returned to Mya’s office a moment later, and as we walked out, Mya collected her things and followed. I glanced back at her asking, “You’re going with us?”

“Yep, lucky you.” She smiled, and this time I watched her more closely. Again, no smile in her eyes.

Mya was bothered, and I needed to find a way to fix that. There was no way I could let my Angel hurt because of something that I did.
