“Well, get over it, Mya, and don’t go screaming some sexual harassment bullshit. We all know that sometimes you have to do things that you don’t want to do to get a job done.”

I was livid, but I remained in my seat. I pictured myself jumping over the desk and smacking that smug look off his face.

He raised a brow. “I told you to take care of the client. If you can’t do that, then I’ll find someone else who can.”

Over my dead body! “The client has been taken care of.” The words fell tensely from my lips without me even realizing I was about to speak them.

I immediately wanted to slap a hand over my mouth, but I held still, and Milt, the smug asshole that he was, began to laugh and leaned back in his chair. “Well, go, Mya! Now that’s how to play the game. Good for you for taking one from the team!”

It took everything in me to surpress the next urge to strangle him. Instead, I painted on a smile and said with a saccharine-sweet voice, “Of course, anything for the team.”

I peered at Rebecca, who looked elated but stunned at my declaration.

“Well, since things are going so well, we need to make sure that you two are together all the time. Rebecca, doesn’t he have a photoshoot today?”

“He does.”

“Good. Make sure Mya goes with you, and make sure the photographer takes photos of them together. Something sexy for his bad-boy image, but with her there, it’s more like he’s captured or something. I don’t know. Tell the photographer that’s what I want. I want to show Alex caught in her web or something to that effect. You know what I mean.”

He had just spoken as if I weren’t even in the room. I was so furious that I could barely see straight as we were dismissed from his office.

Rebecca followed me to my office and closed the door as I walked behind my desk and put my palms flat on the surface. I hung my head, trying to control the utter outrage that I had for my boss.

“He is a total asshole,” Rebecca said. “I can’t believe you didn’t freak out in there. I was freaking out for you, Mya!”

“Trust me. It was hard not to jump over that desk and throttle the man. What a fucking asshole.”

“I just don’t understand how he gets away with that.”

I sighed and sat down. “I don’t know. I guess Milt gets away with it because he brings in more money than most of the other account managers. Mostly because he pulls shit like this. They just overlook it.”

“I’m sorry he did that, but I have to ask ...” She was chewing her bottom lip as I looked up. “Did you really sleep with him?”

“We did not sleep,” I stated pointedly. “We had sex, and before you ask, it was freaking fantastic, but I will not share the details.” I paused for a moment, “And just so you know, I didn’t do it because Milt told me to. I did it because I wanted to.”

“Girl, I would have done it myself. That man is sex on a stick.”

“He is that, but there is a much deeper side to him. That allegation by his ex-wife is wrong. He never told her to have sex with his manager, and he told me last night that he hasn’t been with another woman since he started seeing her. So all those rumors of him sleeping around on her are false.”

“Do you believe him?”

I nodded, “I do. I saw it in his eyes. When he talked about it, he was visibly upset that his ex-wife would accuse him of making her sleep with his manager to better his career. The more I know about him, the more I think it is all just propaganda against him.”

“Wow, okay, well, if you believe him, then I do too. It’s a shame we can’t fix his past image.”

“No, we can’t, but we can fix his image and brand now.”

Rebecca grinned. “Then let’s do that.” She glanced at her watch. “He will be here around eleven. Let’s make it happen.”

I held my hand up, and she high-fived it before leaving my office. The moment she stepped out, my shoulders slumped, and I put my forehead on my desk.

My phone rang, and I spoke with another client about an upcoming event that I was working on behind the scenes. When I hung up, I found a link to the article that Milt had shown us in my mailbox. Rebecca had written It really does look like love.

I opened the link and read the article, and then I lost myself in the image before me. We were a beautiful couple, and we did look like we were in love. A sound at my door caught my attention, and I looked up to see Alex there in the flesh.

Oh, my God! Don’t think flesh! I stood and did my best not to fall apart in his presence. He had walked away last night, and I had to be okay with that. I was a big enough girl to invite him into my home. He never promised me more than great sex, and I had no right to want or ask for more. Once we had his image built and his brand going strong, I would step away, and he would move on with his life.

Briefly, as I followed him and Rebecca out of my office, I thought about how I would probably run into him from time to time around the apartment building. Perhaps we could eventually be friendly with one another or even find a way to be together again. I didn’t have anything against being naughty neighbors.
