Mya

What were the odds that the man that had controlled my dreams last night would be standing before me? Slim, right?

What were the odds that the first client in my new position would be said man? Even slimmer.

I was screwed, and not in a good way.

I couldn’t let this guy ruin this opportunity for me. I had been busting my ass for months trying to prove myself. Now that I had a chance, I would not let him ruin everything.

I pasted on a bright smile that a few people had described as dazzling, and stuck my hand out to shake his, “Mr. Hoyt, what a pleasure to have a face to go with the name and a name for the face. I know that working with you is going to be very interesting, to say the least.”

He chuckled, the sound slipping down my spine like warm honey on a hot day. I pulled my hand back, stepped around him, and to the opposite side of the table, where I set a few folders on the surface in random places as if I might have to pull information from them. Honestly, they were a shield that I hoped would protect me from the man watching me ever so carefully.

“I am sure it will be interesting, Mya. I look forward to working closely with you.” I hated him and his cocky smile at that moment—especially since my girlie parts were starting to pant with desire.

I focused on Milt, listening avidly to what he said—okay, so I pretended to listen to him. Unfortunately, I was distracted by something else. Alex Hoyt’s right hand lay on the table, his thumb slowly moving up and down as if keeping beat to something.

I noticed him glance my way, and his thumb stilled. He shifted his hand to his lap, as if he hadn’t meant for me to see what he was doing. Why? Was he bored? With the amount of money he was paying us, he better not be bored. Was he nervous? No way that a man like that ever got anxious over a meeting. He was Mr. Calm.

It was something to ask him later. Perhaps a way to break the ice, or the lustful haze that clouded my mind when he was around.

Somehow, I managed to make it through the majority of the meeting without embarrassing myself or giving him something he could use against me later.

As we were finishing, Milt directed a comment to me, “Mya will accompany you to the gala tomorrow night. She knows most of the influential people there and can introduce you around. The more people you get to know now, the better it will be when we do your kick-off.”

“Wh-what?” I stammered. “You don’t mean that I have to go as his date, do you?”

Milt laughed, “Of course, Mya. That is part of your job. You need to make sure that he meets the right people, makes the right impression.”

I clamped my teeth so hard that my jaw ached. I had been hired to improve a client’s image. I had not been hired to be his date. However, if I wanted to keep this position, I would do what I had to do—including taking the neanderthal out in public.

I threw Milt a dazzling smile, “Of course! I was only confirming what you needed of me. I’d be honored to take Mr. Hoyt to the gala.”

He nodded, stood, and shook Alex’s hand. “I’ll leave you in the capable hands of Mya and Rebecca.”

“Thank you, Milt. I look forward to all of this. Much more inclusive than my last manager.”

Milt laughed for a moment. “I’m sure we are. You let me know if there is anything that you need.”

“I shall.” Milt left the room, and Alex glanced between the two of us. “So, what’s next?”

Rebecca spoke up, “I only need a few minutes of your time, and then you and Mya can talk more about your engagements. Right now, I need your accounts and passwords for any social media that you have. I will also send you a link to your calendar. You can sync it up to the calendar on your phone to keep you updated.”

“Okay,” He said with a nod. As Rebecca and Alex continued to discuss his upcoming schedule with photographers and journalists, I took the time to study him.

I hadn’t been wrong when I said that he was sexy as sin. The man oozed sexuality. His direct stare was enough to make any woman weak in the knees, and I could tell that Rebecca was just as affected as I was, and she was married.

His cheekbones were strong and defined, and his brows were neatly manicured. His brown hair was short and styled fashionably to the side. If he used product in it, you couldn’t tell. It looked soft, and my fingers tingled with the urge to spear through his hair and find out first hand.

My gaze shifted to his neck and Adam’s apple that was pronounced but not overly so. I wondered what it would feel like on my tongue and then found myself biting my bottom lip as I could imagine doing just that.

As I continued to stare at his throat, I realized that he had turned to face me. My eyes jumped to his and found a brow arched sexily over his eye as if he knew precisely what I had been doing. I shook my head and looked away.

I keyed back into the conversation just as Rebecca finished and told him to call her with any questions and that she would speak with him later today to give him an update on her progress.

She shook his hand and walked out, winking at me over his shoulder as she did.

Alex and I stared at one another for about twenty seconds before I finally spoke. I had intended to talk about business, but for some reason, my conversation went in a different direction. “Thank you for turning your music off last night.”
