“You’re welcome. I’m sorry that I bothered you. The room was soundproofed. Well, at least the walls were. I thought there would be enough soundproofing in the ceiling not to disturb anyone upstairs. I will take care of that this afternoon.”

“Are you trying to sleep with that music on?”

He chuckled. “No, that’s my studio.”

“But isn’t that your bedroom?”

He nodded. “It is, but I use the small bedroom to sleep in so that I have more room for my studio.”

“I thought I read that you had a studio someplace else.”

He sighed. “I did, but it is not available for me right now, and I am watching my finances. I decided to get a two-bedroom apartment and use one of the rooms for my studio for now.”

“Why is it not available to you?”

He frowned and said simply, “Because it’s not.”

I sighed. “Alex, for us to do our jobs and to showcase you in the best light possible, we need to know about you and your life. That means the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s Rebecca’s job to work on your social outreach and connect you with more people interested in your work. It’s Milt’s job to get you shows and prospective clients. It’s my job to improve your image.”

“And how do you propose to do that, Mya?”

“Well, physically, I don’t see much to change.”

He smirked and asked, “Because I’m sexy as sin?”

I bit my tongue to avoid snapping back, then smiled. “Yes, you do fit that bill, but you would do better if you didn’t act like you knew that.”

“Why?”

“Because it causes you to come across as arrogant. Most women don’t like arrogant men, and men don’t want to do business with a man who thinks he is the better than them.”

He nodded. “Okay, I guess I can understand that.”

“So, since you are so stuck on yourself, you’ll have to learn to pretend that when people say you are sexy, that its news to you. Perhaps a bit embarrassing too, and something that you never considered yourself.”

“Embarrassing?”

“Yes, modest people tend to get embarrassed when someone compliments them.”

“Modest? Are you saying that I’m not modest?”

I laughed, “Oh, you, Alex Hoyt, are far from modest.”

He laughed loudly. “You don’t know anything about me, Mya. How can you say that I’m not modest?”

“Do you think that you are?” I asked. “I mean, seriously. Do you think that you are a modest person?”

The humor faded from his face as he considered that. “You think because I joke about you calling me sexy that I’m not modest?”

“I didn’t say that, Alex. I asked you a question. I asked you if you thought you were modest.”

Lines marred his forehead for a moment, and then he rubbed a hand over his jawline. “Alright, maybe I’m not a very modest person when it comes to my body or my life, but when it comes to my work—my art—I am very modest.”

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

“If you are so modest, why do you want to have your name in lights and make a lot of money selling it?”
