His thin lips compressed, and something passed behind his eyes that I couldn’t comprehend. “That is none of your business.”

“Is it not? How can we help you achieve your goal if you don’t tell us why you are doing it?”

“Because it’s personal, Mya. I don’t talk about that stuff with people that I don’t know.”

I leaned my elbows on the table and said, “And yet, you wish for people to see you as a serious artist. It would seem that if you wanted to be recognized that way, you would allow people to learn why. Your why is a big deal, Alex. People want to know what the why’s are. If your reason is to get rich, it’s the powerful people we want to impress. If your goal is to do something deeper, then you need to let people see the why.”

Everything about him was tense, and he put his hands on the table and stood. “My why, Ms. North, is none of your damn business. I hired your firm to repair my image and help build my brand. I did not hire this company to dig into my reasons for what I do. That is none of your business or anyone else’s. Stick to what I hired you to do, or I’ll fire you. Do I make myself clear?”

I hadn’t meant to upset him. “Yes, you do, and I am sorry for upsetting you.”

He collected the papers that Milt and Rebecca had given him, tapping them on the table into a neat pile. “As long as we are clear.” He stared at me for a moment. “What time do I need to be ready tomorrow?”

“Um.” I flipped open my notebook to find the information on the gala. “Six-thirty, and it will be black tie. Do you have a tux?”

“Of course I do. I’ll meet you in the lobby of the building at six-thirty sharp.”

Before I could say another word, he turned and fled the room. Man, talk about a touchy subject. I was going to need to remember that.

I was heading back to my office when Milt called my name and waved me toward his. “Everything go alright after I left?”

“Of course,” I told him brightly. There was no way I would admit to having pissed the client off during his first meeting at our office. That was career suicide.

“Good.” He leaned back in his chair and studied me. “You are aware why we hired you for this particular client, right?”

“Because I did a good job on the proposal?”

He shook his head. “No. We promoted you to this position because we thought you would be a good match for him. Perhaps you will even out his rough exterior.”

“Rough exterior?” I echoed back in question.

“Yes, he has that bad boy reputation of going from one woman to another.”

“Wait, isn’t he getting a divorce right now? How is being married a bad boy image?”

“There is no shortage of rumors that he had several women on the side while being married.”

“I thought the rumors said she was the cheater?”

He shook his head. “She might have, but the last news that came out last night is that he made his wife sleep with his agent to get him better shows and more press.”

“What?” I squeaked.

“Yep, she did an interview last night talking about how much she still loves him, even though he pimped her out to his agent.”

What kind of man would do that to his wife? That was disgusting. Then suddenly, I thought about what Milton had said just moments before.

“Wait, you said that you thought I was a good match for Alex to even out his rough exterior. What exactly do you want me to do with him?”

“We want you to attach yourself to him. Make everyone believe that he’s fallen for you. You’re angelic, sweet, perky, everything his wife is not. While we want his bad-boy image to remain, we need to focus on making it for a heartthrob bad boy, not an asshole bad boy. Make sense?”

“And you expect people to believe I changed him?”

“That is exactly what I think. Do whatever you have to do to make people believe it. Nothing is off the table.”

I laughed a little nervously. “Nothing? What are you asking me to do, Milt?”

He leaned forward, “I’m saying please the client, Mya, and do whatever you have to do to prove to the public that he’s fallen for someone like you. If you have to sleep with him, so be it. Probably be the best fuck you ever get.”
