“Yes.”

“That’s all that counts.”

Was it? I wasn’t sure. Suddenly, my mood began to shift. As thoroughly as I had been satisfied, I now felt mortified at my behavior. I rolled to my side and got up, wrapping the towel around me until I collected my robe, then I quickly pulled it on and tied the sash.

“I think you should go, Zeke.”

When I turned to face him, he lay on the floor, staring up at me. I forced myself not to let my gaze travel the length of his incredible body.

“What?”

“I think you should go. We should never have done that.”

He laughed, “You’re kidding, right? Are you going to say that shouldn’t have happened? You wanted that as much as I did.”

“Maybe I wanted it, but I shouldn’t have taken it.”

He got up and snagged his track pants of the floor, “You say that like I’m a fucking donut that you just ate while you’re on a diet.”

“In a way, you are.”

“What?” He snapped as he yanked on his pants. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“You are the forbidden food, Zeke. You are dating my best friend. I had no right to sleep with you.”

He approached me, fire in his dark blue eyes. “We did not sleep together, Shelby. We had sex. Fantastic and mind-blowing sex! Get your terminology right.”

I threw my hands in the air, “There is no difference, and you know it!”

“There is a huge difference. When you sleep with someone, you let them into your life when you are most vulnerable. When you have no control over what happens to you. There is a big fucking difference.”

“Yeah, well, I just let you into my body! That’s a little more personal to me than being asleep with someone?”

“Is it?” He asked as he jerked back slightly. “People do all kinds of things with their bodies for other people, but it’s the step where you actually trust them enough to close your eyes and let go where it gets personal.”

“Pfft, whatever.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Whatever you want to call it, we should never have done that.”

“What do I fucking have to do to prove to you that I’m not dating Diane?”

“It doesn’t matter.” I started to turn, but he grabbed my arm and stopped me. Taking me by the shoulders as he got in my face.

“It does matter. It matters a whole fucking lot, baby.”

“Stop calling me baby! I am not your baby.” I hissed at him. I had lost my mind. I wasn’t mad at Zeke, not really. I was furious with myself for giving in to the temptation. I knew this would happen, and yet I let it. I was a horrible friend.

He dropped his hands from my arms and stepped back. “You’re seriously going to do this?”

“Yes. I need you to leave Zeke, and I don’t think we should see each other again.”

“Not until I tell Diane we are through, right?”

I shook my head as I dropped my chin to my chest to gather my strength, “No.” I lifted my face and shook back my hair. “I can’t see you again, even if you break it off with her.”

“What? Why?”

“Because this will break her heart. I slept with her boyfriend,” I put my hand up when he started to interrupt. “Even if you don’t call it that, she does! She still thinks you two are together! When I tell her this, it is going to hurt her! I don’t hurt my friends, Zeke! No man is worth a friendship that I have had for over fifteen years!”

He shook his head, then ran his hands over his head before they dropped to his hips. Part of me wanted to throw myself into his arms and say that I was wrong, that we could make it work, but the other part knew that doing that would just make this situation worse.
