“And you can never have kids?”

“Actually, I can. My parents and I had a long discussion before I underwent treatment, and they talked me into freezing my sperm. So, with the help of a lab, I can fertilize an egg.”

“You can still have children,” I stated the words, feeling the immediate disappointment that I had felt begin to lift.

He nodded and brushed his thumb over my cheek. “When I find the right woman, and she accepts that I can’t do it the old fashion way, then yes. I can.”

I stared up at him, “Did Diane know that?”

He shook his head, “No. She didn’t. It’s not something that I talk about to just anyone. I have only ever told three women. The woman I was previously engaged to, Diane, and now you.”

“What did Diane say when you told her?”

“Well, she knew that it wasn’t mine.”

“But she said it in the hallway like she needed to tell us both that it was.”

“I think she just needed to come clean to both of us about what has been going on in her life.”

“Oh, my god!” I stepped away from him, putting my hands over my face for a moment. “What a horrible friend I have been to her. She kept telling me that she needed to talk to me, but I thought it was about you and me, and I was afraid to speak to her. I didn’t want to ruin our friendship.”

“I know. I get it.”

I shifted so I could look at him again, “Did you tell her about us?”

“I did.”

I winced. “How angry was she?”

He chuckled, “Not as much as I thought she’d be. She seemed to take it in stride.”

“But whose baby is it?”

“That I think you need to speak to her about.”

I nodded, “I will.”

He stepped forward, “Shelby, I know it’s been a long day for you, and for me too. Why don’t we both get some sleep, and we can finish this discussion Friday night? I have a dinner meeting tomorrow, and I think Diane said she wanted to meet up with you. After you hear it from her, you and I can figure out what will happen next. Alright?”

I nodded, suddenly feeling exhausted as the tension completely faded from my body. “That sounds like a good idea.”

“Alright, then I’ll see you on Friday, and please don’t disappear again on me.”

“I won’t.”

He leaned forward and brushed his lips over mine tenderly. “I’ll see you on Friday, baby.”

While usually, him calling me baby irritated me, tonight, it warmed my heart. I walked him to the door, where he turned at the last moment and took me into his arms, kissing me passionately before he pulled back and touched my cheek with a finger. “Friday.”

“Friday,” I repeated, and he stepped away and opened the door. I leaned out the door and watched him walk down the hallway, wondering if I really was asleep and dreaming this. Was it possible that I would get to keep my friendship with Diane and have Zeke too?

A girl could dream.
