Diane blinked at me twice. “What do you mean you’re sterile?”

“As in, I shoot blanks, Diane. I had cancer as a teenager, and the treatment made me sterile.”

She sank onto the sofa. “Oh.”

“So, why don’t you tell me what’s been going on.”

I came around to the other side of the sofa and took a seat as she stared at the carpet.

“I’ve been working a lot of long hours.”

“So that wasn’t a lie.”

She shook her head, “No, that wasn’t a lie. Not completely anyway. I was also sleeping with my boss.”

“Your boss? Isn’t he married?”

She nodded, “Yes, he is, although he’s getting a divorce.”

“Are you sure? Or did he just say that to get in your pants?”

She shook her head, “No, I know for certain he is. I was there when he was served with the papers. That was the first night we had sex.”

I laughed, “Obviously, he wasn’t all that broken up about this marriage going south.”

“No,” She replied and settled back on the couch. “They had been having problems for a while. I knew that, and the two of us had been flirting with one another for a while. Once Doug signed the papers, he said he was free to take what he wanted.”

“And did he know that you were seeing someone?”

She hesitated, “Yeah, he did, but honestly, Zeke, I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal. I mean, I liked the guy and thought he was attractive and all, but I never expected to have feelings for him.”

“So you were just going to sleep with both of us?”

“No. I mean, I did sleep with him while you and I were still in a relationship, but I didn’t expect it to be anything more than one night.”

I nodded but remained quiet.

“I’m sorry, Zeke. You know that I liked you, but I think we both knew from the start that what we had wasn’t going to last.”

“True, but you should have told me that before you fucked your boss.”

“I should have. I’m sorry. Will you forgive me for that?”

“Yes.”

Her shoulders slumped forward, “Thank you. I know that is more than I deserve, and I hope we can continue to be friends. I do like you, in a friend kind of way.”

I took hold of her hand, “And I like you in a friend kind of way, too, Diane.”

She smiled and squeezed my hand. Then she squinted her eyes at me. “So now, do you want to explain to me what is going on with Shelby?”

I chuckled, “Yeah, well, that’s a bit of a story.”

She released my hand and shifted on the couch, crossing her legs, “Let’s hear it. I think it might be better to hear it from you first. Then I’ll talk to Shelby later.”

I considered my words carefully for a moment before I stated, “I like her.”
