“That’s probably a good idea.” She yawned again as she got to her feet.

“Want me to take you home?”

“No, I’ll be fine.” She stepped toward me, and I pulled her into a tight hug. “Thank you, Zeke. I’m sorry about how I handled this.”

“Yeah, well, that makes two of us.” I kissed the top of her head. “You get some sleep, and we will talk again soon.”

I walked her to the elevator and waited until she was on it before heading to Shelby’s apartment. There was a good chance that she’d be asleep or wouldn’t even answer the door, but I needed to try.

I loved the surprised look that crossed her features when she saw me. I loved her face even more after I’d shocked her with a kiss. The fact that she couldn’t hold back from returning the kiss told me that I had a chance with this woman. I wanted that chance.

Sparks came to her eyes as I told her I wasn’t having a child. How could she think I would have told Diane to get an abortion? I could never do that. I would never do that.

Finally, I explained what was going on and told her about my cancer. I saw many emotions flip through her eyes and tried to calm her fears and anger. While I wanted to tell her how I felt, I knew that tonight was not the night to do so. We both needed to rest, and she needed to speak with Diane.

I could tell her till I was blue in the face that Diane was okay with us being together, but until she heard it out of Diane’s mouth, she wouldn’t believe me. Friday would be soon enough.

After kissing her goodnight, I walked back to my apartment with a smile on my face.

The next day went slow as fucking molasses. I must have looked at my watch two dozen times during the day, dying for it to be over. Unfortunately, it was a busy day that required my head to be in the game and not the other one deep in her.

I did, however, text her and tell her that I hoped she and Diane had a pleasant evening. She replied with a simple thank you and said they were meeting for dinner. Hopefully, they would have a nice evening and iron everything out.

If I were lucky, Diane would even put in a good word for me.

Josh and I were heading to our dinner meeting when he glanced at me from behind the wheel, “You look like you’re in a better mode than you were last night. You get everything ironed out?”

“Not yet, although things are looking up.” I proceeded to tell him what had happened the night before, and he laughed.

“Only you would have an easy out. You know that for almost any other guy if a woman said she was pregnant, they’d go into panic mode.”

I chuckled, “Yeah, that is true. I do have to say that for a split-second, I had an oh shit moment, but then reality kicked back in.”

“Well, I hope it works out.”

“I do too.”

We dropped the conversation after that and dealt with the business at hand. When I got home that night, I was tempted to see if Shelby was home, but I had promised myself I would give her tonight.

That night as I lay in bed, I thought about everything that had happened in the last few weeks. I did hope that things worked out for Diane and her boss and that they could find a suitable arrangement for them and the baby.

I also thought about what I knew about Shelby and what I wanted to know. Did she want kids? Would she have a problem having a test tube baby? Did she even want to have a relationship with me? Maybe she only wanted someone to have sex with and nothing more.

I hoped she wanted more, and I had every intention of letting her know that I was in this for the long haul, and if I had to, I would wear her down.

With that thought in mind, I switched paths and thought about all the ways I could indeed wear her down, starting with physically.

The following day, I took a moment to write her a note, and then I read it over and smiled to myself before I slipped it under her door.

At the office, I made a list of groceries I would need to purchase on the way home, and then I set about working.

An hour before I typically left, I packed up my laptop and headed out. Josh stood by the reception desk as I was going, and I paused, “Wish me luck.”

“Man, I’m pretty sure you won’t need any luck, but I’ll give you some advice.”

I cocked a brow, “Yeah, what’s that?”
