“Like her? As in like her as a friend, or really like her as in you want to be with her?”
“I want to see what there is,” I said truthfully.
“Did you already sleep with her?” She asked, “And be honest here.”
“We had sex, yes, but I have not slept with her.”
She rolled her eyes, “Only you see a difference in those two.”
“Hey, there is a huge difference in getting off with someone and trusting them at your most vulnerable moment.”
“If you say so.” She muttered and then laughed, “You really had sex with Shelby?”
“Yes, but I’ll have you know that she was extremely upset about it afterward. She felt horrible for doing that to you, although I assured her that you and I were over.”
She was quiet for a long moment, “I guess I can’t be mad at that.”
“I tried to contact you many times. Why do you think I kept saying we needed to talk?”
“Honestly, I thought you knew I was cheating on you, and that’s why you wanted to talk.”
“I guess it doesn’t matter now.”
“No.” She replied, “Do you really like Shelby?”
“I do. I honestly do like her, and I think she really likes me too.”
Diane grew thoughtful, “That’s why she went to the beach. She always goes there when she is upset and needs to think.”
I remained quiet, unsure what to say as she continued to dwell over something.
She lifted her brown eyes to me, “I bet she was upset that she had sex with you. Shelby would never do that to me unless she had real feelings for someone.”
“I’d like to think that she does have them.”
Diane smiled at me, “I can see you two together.”
“Thanks.” I waited a moment, “Do me a favor and don’t be too upset with her. I pushed her, so if you want to be anger, blame me.”
She waved a hand at me, “No, I’m not angry. I hope that things work out for you two.”
“What about you? What are you going to do about your boss?”
“Well, I told him the other day, and while he was surprised, he seems okay with it. Neither of us wants to jump into anything, but he said he would be there for the baby and me.”
“Do you think it could turn out to be a decent relationship?”
She shrugged, “I don’t honestly know, and I’m not sure I want to be in a serious relationship with him.” She sighed, “I need to take in day by day right now.”
“Smart idea not to jump into anything.”
The two of us sat there talking for a while longer, and then she yawned. “I should get going. I need to go talk to Shelby.”
“It’s pretty late. Do you think she will even be awake?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why don’t you go home and get some sleep, and I’ll go check on Shelby? Tomorrow night after you’ve had some rest, the two of you can talk, and you can explain it all to her.”
