“Because you wanted to sleep with Whiskey, but you aren’t allowed to sleep with Lilly, so you have to stop thinking of her that way.”

“Ruin all my fun,” I muttered as I walked toward the door.

“I know you too well, Zack.”

“You know that it would have been much easier if things had worked out for us.”

“Yeah, maybe, but too bad having sex with you was like having sex with my brother. Gross.” She did a fake shiver.

“They do say incest is best.”

“Get out of my office. That’s disgusting.”

“I’ll see you later. Call me and let me know how Kari is doing.” I put my hand on the knob to turn it.

“Keep your hands off my assistant,” she commanded again.

“Come on, give me a little credit, Lydia.”

“No, not even a little bit.” She threw her bag over her shoulder, and hustled toward the door. I opened it for her, and the two of us walked out.

Lilly lifted her head, glancing between us. “Are you off to a meeting?”

“No, I have to pick up my daughter from school. She’s running a fever.”

“Oh, okay, is there something else you want me to work on after this?”

“Zack is going to show you a few things,” She looked at me pointedly, and I rolled my eyes. “And he’s going to behave, and if he has time, he’s going to give you a tour of the plant later.”

“Okay,” Lilly replied, although she suddenly looked concerned and nervous as she peered my way. Suddenly, she began to babble. “Mr. Smoker doesn’t need to bother giving me a tour. Paul already said he’d be happy to give me one.”

Paul? Fuck that! “No, Paul has a lot going on. I’ll give you one in a few minutes. I just need to make a phone call and let my assistant know where I’ll be.”

“Paul isn’t that busy,” Lydia said.

“Yes, he is,” I stated firmly, and if he thought he had time on his hands, I’d find him something to do so he would be busy. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

As I walked the hallway toward my office, I heard Lydia saying something about not minding my attitude. Whatever. Paul was an attractive man who was recently divorced. I could see him being interested in Lilly, but I didn’t like that. Whiskey was mine. She might not know that yet, but she was mine.

After waking up with her on my mind, I was determined to find a way to make her that.

No sooner hadI gotten back to my office, when Tina, my assistant, told me that I had a phone call to return that was important. I went into my office, hoping to handle the call quickly, but forty minutes later, I hung up the phone and glanced at my watch.

It was lunchtime now, and Tina was no longer at her desk. Most employees were away from their desks, and I assumed Whiskey would have left too. I went to check, and as I arrived in the next hallway, I heard voices coming from the back of the offices. I frowned as I realized it was Paul’s voice. A moment later, he stepped into view with Whiskey at his side. She was staring up at him, a pleasant look on her face, and seemed avidly interested in what he was explaining.

“Oh, hey, Smoke. If you’re looking for Lydia, she had to leave.”

“Yes, I am aware of that,” I replied, trying not to let my frustration show in my voice. “Where were you two?”

“I was giving Lilly a tour of the plant.”

I shifted my gaze to Lilly for a moment. Wow. She really didn’t want to be around me, did she?

Before I could reply, she spoke. “Lydia called him before she left and asked him to show me around.”

That eased my frustration — slightly. “Of course, she did,” I replied. “Thanks for showing her around, Paul. You should probably get your lunch while you have a chance.”
