The heady feeling of the orgasm quickly vanished after Zack left Lydia’s office. I waited a few seconds, made sure my clothes were in order, and then went to use the bathroom. When I returned to my desk, I expected people to stare at me, like they knew what I had done.

Except no one seemed to know. Didn’t I have the words the sexy-as-hell owner gave me an incredible orgasm in my boss’s office printed on my forehead? I swear I could feel the heat of those letters branded to my skin.

The people that passed my desk either nodded or said a quick hello. Some ignored me completely. Tina, Zack’s assistant, is the only one I had any conversation with, and it was strictly business as she was helping me with a report that Lydia needed to be completed.

I had gone back and forth with Lydia over the phone and through emails all afternoon, and shortly before I was due to leave, I finished the report, got her approval, and forwarded it along with other information to the clients she indicated.

I washed out my coffee cup and collected my purse, stalling slightly to see if I might get one more glimpse of Zack before I left. Unfortunately, that wasn’t going to happen, and I left the office feeling a bit off-kilter.

During the afternoon, I had tried hard not to think about him, but the fact that he could give me an orgasm in just a few minutes with only the use of his hand blew my mind, almost as much as the actual event did. I had never gotten off that quickly or easily. Was it because it had been so long, or did Zack Smoker have the magic touch? I would be stupid to say that I didn’t want to do it again because my body was quickly growing a mind of its own and bypassing all reason.

Getting involved with my boss was very wrong. Well, not my boss exactly, but he was a boss. I knew that nothing could come of it. However, would it be wrong to take advantage of it for a little while? Perhaps another couple of trysts, not in the office, would be okay.

That’s what I was thinking about as I arrived at my apartment. I paused at my front door, noting that the door was cracked open slightly and admonishing myself for not securing it when I left this morning. I must be more careful in the future.

I pushed the door open and stepped in, turning to close and lock it behind me, and then flipped on the light switch for the hallway. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as I saw a decorative pillow lying on the ground with the stuffing pulling. What the hell?

I took another step in and glanced into the kitchen. My jaw dropped as I flipped on the light and stared at the mess on the floor. My heart began to hammer in my chest for the third time that day, and I quickly fled the apartment, pulling my cellphone from my purse as I got to the stairs.

It took me a moment to dial, but then the phone rang, and a woman answered, asking what my emergency was. “Someone broke into my house.”

“Are they still there?”

“I don’t know. As soon as I saw things out of order, I came back outside. Can you send an officer to check it?”

“Absolutely.” She asked me questions and told me to remain outside the apartment until officers arrived. I paced back and forth, and my neighbor two doors down stepped out.

“What’s going on, Lilly?”

“Did you see anyone go into my apartment, Kate?”

She shook her head. “No, why?”

“Because someone broke in and destroyed my home.”

“What?” She yelped.

“I found the door unlocked but thought I might have forgotten to lock it on my way out. When I stepped in, I saw things that weren’t right, and someone smashed all my dishes on the floor.”

“Oh, my God! Who would do such a thing?”

I compressed my lips because a memory burst into my mind of when Wade had been pissed that I wanted to go away with two of my friends. Why he was angry was beyond me as he had been the one to suggest it, and it was his co-worker’s wife that I was going with.

“I don’t know,” I replied to Kate, and in the distance, I heard sirens coming my way. I stared at the door to my apartment, half expecting Wade to come strolling out, but no one did. When the two police officers arrived, they asked me to stay outside and went in to ensure no one was inside.

They were there for almost three hours as they took reports, dusted for prints, and questioned me up one side and down the other. I wasn’t going to supply a name for them, and I doubted they would be able to link prints to Wade if it were him.

Why would he do this? He wanted the divorce. He told me he practically hated me, so why would he come all the way here and destroy my property? It didn’t make sense.

Somewhere in there, Zack had texted me, and I had replied, but I was so distraught at the time I couldn’t continue a conversation with him and told him I’d speak with him later.

When he showed up at my apartment, I was somehow unsurprised to see him there. I was also a little glad that he was, as his presence calmed me more than it should have.

Well, that was until he suggested I stay at his house. He was crazy to offer such a thing, but as we cleaned up the mess left behind, I knew I didn’t want to stay here — at least not tonight.

When we were mostly finished, I sighed and pulled out a duffle bag, resigned to take Zack up on his offer.
