“I hope that is to come to my house.”

“Yes, you’re right. I don’t want to be here—at least tonight.”

“You’ll be safe at my place, and you’ll even have it to yourself for a few days.”

I spun toward him. “Wait? Are you going to leave because I’m going to be there? I thought you said you had more than one bedroom.”

“I have three bedrooms, but I’m not leaving because of you. I have a business trip I have to go on. I leave early tomorrow morning and won’t be back for three days.”

“Oh.” I replied, putting another blouse into my bag. “Are you sure you want me there when you aren’t? Won’t that be weird?”

“Not at all. We can pretend you are house sitting for me.”

I chuckled for the first time since I had gotten home. “So you expect me to feed your pets and water your plants, huh?”

“No pets, no plants, but if you feel like cleaning, you are welcome to.” He said with a grin.

“We’ll see about that,” I replied dryly. Although I knew that if something needed cleaning, and it would make Zack happy, I would do it.

“Have you eaten?” He asked me.

I shook my head. “No, I have been a little busy.”

“Well, we can get you something on the way home, or I have leftover pasta in the fridge.”

“Leftovers are fine. You have gone through enough trouble.”

Zack approached me. “This is no trouble, Lilly. I’m glad I can help.”

I zipped the duffle bag and turned to him. “I appreciate it more than you know.”

The two of us stared at one another, and I wondered if he was debating with himself as I was. The instinct to lean toward him and feel his body against mine was strong. Suddenly, the earlier memory played through my mind, and I quickly turned away from him.

“Okay, I think that’s it. I will have to call the apartment office tomorrow and speak to them.”

“You aren’t going to keep staying here, are you?”

“I don’t know. I need to see how I feel in a few days.”

“Well, until then, you stay at my place. I don’t think it’s smart to stay here. The city is pretty safe, but bad things still happen. You are better off living in a secured building that has video cameras.”

“Maybe, but I’m not sure I could afford that right now.”

“If you can’t afford it on what Lydia is paying you, I’ll give you a raise,” he stated firmly.

“You can’t do that, Zack.”

He laughed. “The hell I can’t. I own the company. I can pay you anything I want.”

I rolled my eyes because I didn’t think arguing with him at that moment would be a good idea. I was too tired and too hungry and still fretting over the fact that Wade was probably the one responsible for this mess.

“Put your things in my car,” Zack said after I locked my apartment and we were heading down.

“Why? I’ll just follow you over.”

“No, I think you should leave your car here.”

“Then how the heck am I going to get to work?”
