“I already told you I’ll be gone for a few days. You can use my car while I’m gone.”

“Zack, I don’t think that is necessary.”

“It might not be necessary, but do me a favor and go with it. Once I get back, we’ll see where things are, and we can bring your car over then.”

I was too tired to argue with him, so I put my bag into the back of his Volvo, and then he opened the passenger door for me. I thanked him and slipped into the car, feeling exhausted.

I yawned as he put the car into gear. “I’ll warm up food for you when we get back to my place. Then you can take a relaxing bath or shower and get some sleep.”

“Thank you, Zack. This really is going above and beyond what you need to do for an employee.”

He glanced at me. “Who said I’m doing it for an employee?”

I stared at his profile as he drove down the street. “Zack, despite what happened today, you know I told you I would not sleep with you.”

“Yes, I know what you said, and I’m not expecting anything from you, Whiskey. I’m not doing this because you are an employee, but because I feel like you are a friend. Is there a problem with that?”

“No,” I shook my head slowly. “No, there is not.”

“Good, because I think you need a friend now more than anything else.”

He didn’t know the half of it. Except for Becca, I didn’t have any friends. I hoped that Zack and I could build a friendship, and I appreciated him more than he knew.

I watched where he drove so I could find it again on my own. He pulled to a garage entrance, and as he pulled up, the gate opened. He pointed at a device in the top right of his window. “This opens the gate. If you don’t have one, you must input a card and a key code to gain entry. There is twenty-four-hour security here, and you will see guards walking around from time to time.”

“Wow, that is nice.”

“It is.” He pulled around to the second floor of the parking garage. “These are my two spots.” The number seven-twelve was painted on the wall in front of us.

There was another car beside us. “Who is parked in your other spot?”

“That’s mine also. If we bring your car over, I’ll put that up in the open parking so you can park here.” He pointed at a camera a few spaces away directed at his car. “There are many cameras in here, so you don’t have to worry about walking alone in the parking lot.”

“Wow, this place is really safe. How much does it cost to live in a place like this?”

He chuckled. “Well, I’m not sure I could give you that much of a raise, but we’ll find you someplace safer than where you were.”

“Oh, okay.”

He collected my bag and carried it to the elevator, pressed a key fob on his car keys to the pad, and the door opened a few moments later. Inside, he hit the button to seven, and away we went.

Perhaps I should have been nervous about being in his place alone with him, but I was too tired and hungry at the moment. I followed him down the hallway to his door and waited while he unlocked it.

When I stepped inside, my jaw dropped. On the opposite side of the room, the wall was entirely glass and gave an incredible view of the river running through the city's center. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure I could never afford a place like this.”

He chuckled. “I’ve been saving for a while and got a great deal here. Let me show you where your room is, and then I’ll warm up dinner while you get settled.”

I followed him down the hallway, craning my neck left and right to see everything as I went. I was impressed by the condo and by how it was decorated. He turned down another hallway and stepped through a door. “This will be your room. There is a private bathroom, and that is the closet.” He pointed out the two doors.

He set my bag on the bed and turned to look at me. I stepped forward. “Thank you, Zack. You have no idea how much I appreciate this.”

He stared at me for a long moment, and I watched a muscle in his jaw pop a few times before he nodded and stepped around me. “You are welcome. You get settled, and I’ll get your dinner ready. Give me about ten minutes.”

“Perfect,” I told him and watched him step out and close the door behind him. I sank to the mattress and then curled on my side the moment he did. I just needed a moment to relax, and I closed my eyes.

It took me a whole thirty seconds to begin to drift away.
