“But I work for him, and I can’t get involved with him.”

She laughed. “You’re already involved with him. The moment you flirted with him at the bar, you were involved with him.”

My eyes popped wide. “You know about that?”

“Yes, he told me he had met you there. I knew he was watching someone in the restaurant. It wasn’t until you were leaving that I saw you and wondered if it was you who had claimed his attention. It sure wasn’t on the clients we were dining with that night.”

“Whoops, sorry.”

“No worries. He can get easily distracted.”

“Or hell-bent on someone doing what he wants,” I added, and she laughed.

“Yeah, that too, but don’t let him push you around. I understand that your ex was controlling.”

“Yes, Wade was, but not in a bad way.”

“Lilly, any man who tries to control you, and it’s not in the bedroom in a sexy, good way, is controlling in a not-so-good way.”

“Both of you are making more out of this than there is.”

“Maybe, but just be careful, and if Zack crosses that line, he’s not doing it to be mean. He is very protective, and it comes over as overbearing sometimes. Just put him back in his place, let him lick his wounds for a little while, and then jump back in the sack with him.”

“I’m not going to sleep with him again.”

“Famous last words,” Lydia said with a laugh, and then her phone rang, and she got up and answered it.

I thoughtabout our conversation for the rest of the week and knew that Zack was getting home tonight. Maybe I would text him and see if he wanted to have lunch on Saturday or Sunday so we could talk.

While I still wasn’t sold on getting involved with him, I didn’t want this awkward silence between us either. If we were going to work together, then we needed to find a middle ground. I just wondered if that middle ground was in a central room or the bedroom.

I had to admit that I enjoyed having sex with him, way more than I should have. In fact, last night, I couldn’t get it out of my mind, and I slipped my hand between my legs and found that magic spot. I had only done that a few times before, but after I finished, I wondered why I didn’t do it more often. The stress has been nicely relieved, and I must remember that.

That night, I got home late, as I had met with Becca right after work for drinks and dinner. When I arrived home, I made it into my apartment before I remembered that I needed both cream and coffee. There was no way I could start my Saturday without those. I grabbed my purse again and headed back down the stairs.

When I got to my car, it looked like it was sitting funny, and I bent down next to a tire to find it was flat. “Damnit!” I hissed and looked around on the ground. When had I run over a nail?

I stared down the street, it was only three blocks to the little all-night shop, and the neighborhood was quiet. I tucked my purse close and started walking toward the store. A few cars drove by, but I didn’t see anyone until I was on my way back.

As I passed the alley to a building a block away from my complex, a man wearing a baseball cap pulled low over his forehead stepped out and right into my path. “Excuse me,” I said politely and began to step around him. He grabbed my arm and jerked me closer to him.

“Scream, and I will cut you from chest to cunt.” He growled at me, his beer-scented breath made me gag, and before I could utter a sound, he spun me around and shoved me into the alley with his gloved hand over my mouth.

Two feet into the alley, my protective instinct began to kick in, and I struggled to free myself. He was too strong for me, and panic began to blur my vision as he moved me deeper into the dirty alley. I screamed behind his hand, and he shoved me hard against a wall. My head bounced off, my mouth freed, and the moment I could breathe, I sucked in air and began to scream.

He struck my head on the rough brick again, and I felt something warm begin to run down my face as my head throbbed, and I sobbed. I should have listened to Zack and Lydia! I should never have left my apartment. I could have lived without coffee in the morning!

He pushed his body up against mine, and I wanted to vomit as his mouth pressed against my ear. “He said you were boring, but I’m not sure he was right. I bet you will be a real wildcat while I fuck you.”

His words were like ice water as they rushed through my veins. What did he say? Did he say that someone told him I was boring? Did Wade have something to do with this?

He laughed. “That got your attention, huh?”

“What do you want?” I mumbled behind my hand.

He shoved his hand between the wall and my body and squeezed my right breast painfully. “What the fuck do you think I want? I want a piece of this ass.” He pressed his hips against my buttocks, and I felt the sickening feel of his erection.
