I never would've imagined I would actually want to, but that was the strange direction my life had taken lately.

At the moment, my biggest concern was that Castor was going to follow through on his earlier threat of banning me from the hunt. I wasn't even sure he technically had the authority to do that, but I didn’t want to find out. He hadn't brought it up since, and being the one to do so seemed unwise—at least until the next time he tried to go out without me.

When Castor had found out about my morning sessions with Father Marius, he had frowned, making his disapproval clear, but he hadn't said anything about that, either.

That morning, Castor had been called to take care of some training matters with the new recruits, so I went on my own. Father Marius was alone in his office when I arrived, much to my relief, but he was kneeling before the altar in prayer, so I stood aside and stayed quiet.

When he looked up a few moments later, he gave me a tired smile.

"My apologies. I'm afraid I got a bit of a late start this morning."

"No, please, I'm the one interrupting your schedule," I said.

"Not at all," he said, standing to walk over me. "What do you say we have our session out in the garden this morning? I'm sure we could both use a bit of fresh air."

"That sounds nice," I said. "Assuming Castor hasn't decided I'm not allowed to go outside."

Father Marius chuckled. "I see he's been a bit overzealous lately."

"You can say that again," I muttered, following him down the hall. It was chilly out, but the cool air felt nice against my skin.

"He's always been overprotective of the people he cares for," Father Marius remarked. "I'm sure you can understand why."

"Yeah," I murmured. "I just never thought I would be counted among them."

The white-haired hunter looked back, giving me a knowing smile as we reached the walkway wrapping around the garden. The roses were in full bloom, and everything looked almost ethereal. "I think you might be surprised. Tell me, how do you think he's adjusting to everything?"

"Adjusting?" I frowned. "You mean to being part wolf?"

"Among other things.”

I stopped to think about it. I didn’t like talking about Castor behind his back, even though I was sure he had discussed me with Father Marius and the others on plenty of occasions. It just felt different somehow.

"As well as possible, I guess," I answered. "He still hasn't shifted, so there doesn't seem to be all that much to worry about right now.”

"No," Father Marius mused. "I suppose there isn’t. But I think it's only a matter of time."

"Really?" I asked.

"Well, he is clearly an alpha," he answered. "And if there's one thing I understand about shifters, it's that alphas and omegas have a way of bringing out each other's more… shall we say, primal natures?"

I grimaced. "I was afraid that's what you meant."

He laughed. "Forgive me. I realize it's a rather personal matter, but it's one in which I have a good deal of professional curiosity."

"Yeah, I guess I can understand that.” I hesitated as another question occurred to me. One I wasn't sure I wanted the answer to. "Who else knows?"

"About you being an omega?" he asked. "Or about Castor being an alpha?"

I shrugged. "Both, I guess."

"Oh, I’d say about half of the Abbey."

I groaned inwardly. "Well, that sucks."

He tilted his head, clearly amused. "Why does it bother you so much if people realize you're an omega?"

"Proving myself as a hunter was hard enough when I thought I was a regular werewolf—I mean shifter," I corrected myself. "Now they’re going to think I'm weak and pathetic.”
