She snaps her phone from the counter and puts it to her ear, never taking her eyes off me.

“Hello?” There’s a glint of anger in her demeanor, but then her face pales. “Dammit, I told you to stop calling this number.”

My sensors are immediately on high alert.

“Who the hell was that?”

She drops the phone on the table with a thud.

“Nobody…just a stupid heavy breather.”

“How often do you get those calls?”

She huffs, stalking toward the couch. “It’s no big deal, Chase.”

“How often?”

She lets out a harsh breath. “Fine, every day. But it’s not a big deal. It’s just some idiot breathing into the phone.”

My heart is beating out of my chest. I’m pissed. “Shit! Why didn’t you tell me? Give me your phone.”

“What? Why?”

“Give me the phone, princess.”

After a call to Jason, he assured me he’d pull the phone records and do a trace, but wasn’t confident about getting any substantial information. I also installed an app so I can track Melanie’s phone at all times, but I’m keeping that my little secret.

I enter the living room, and she’s curled up on the couch, the stress apparent on her face.

“Jason said he’d trace the call, but there are no guarantees. I step toward the picture window and glance outside.

“Okay. I guess you’re leaving now?”

Not a chance.

“No, I’m staying.” I take a seat next to her.

“For how long? I mean… I don’t mind if you stay but…”

“I’m not leaving you alone.” I tell her sternly.

“Chase, really I’m fine.”

“I’ll stay in my car if I have to.”

“That’s ridiculous. If it means that much to you, you can sleep on the couch.”

I swallow hard and pray to God for restraint. Sleeping in the same house with this woman spells disaster. Her flushed face, those lust-filled blue eyes, are like an invitation. We hold our gaze for a long time, daring each other to make a move.

I’m not sure what possesses me to touch her when I brush a loose piece of hair from her face.

Her eyes dilate as her lips hover so close to mine.

Just one taste.

Leaning in, I press a gentle kiss to those luscious lips I’ve been staring at all night.

It’s heaven.
