“I want you to stay here while I’m gone. I need to know you’ll be safe.”

“I’m going home, Chase. I called Arie this morning and he’s letting me come back to work early.”

I tense up immediately. “Dammit, Mel, no way. Not until we catch this nutcase.” I growl.

“What if you never catch him? I can’t let some psycho stop me from living my life.”

I jump to my feet pacing around the room. How can I keep her safe if I’m not here? If something were to happen to her, I’d never forgive myself.

“Chase, calm down.” She rises from her seat, grabbing me by the wrist.

“I’m not going to go to Atlanta.”

“You have to go. You’ll lose your job.”

“Fuck!” I fall back onto the couch, and she drops to her knees in front of me.

“I’ll be okay, Chase. You need to go.” I pull her up onto my lap, so she’s straddling me.

“When I find this motherfucker, I’m going to kill him.”

“Relax Captain America.” She smirks. Then she presses her soft lips to mine, taking my breath away. I pull her bottom lip between my teeth, giving it a little suck until she moans. My hands slide into her hair, holding her forehead to mine.

“I’m falling for you so hard.” It should scare me, but it just feels right.

“Me too,” she whispers.

I seal my mouth over her plump, red lips, our tongues bound in a slow steamy tango. There’s no urgency. I could kiss her all day.

“Stay here while I’m gone.”

“I’ll think about it,” she says breathlessly.

What is it about this woman? I can’t think straight when I’m around her. “Do you know how fucking beautiful you are?”

“Show me.”

I slip my hands underneath her shirt, cupping her breasts through her thin lace bra. Her nipples harden through the soft fabric as I rub slow circles with my thumbs. Her head falls back, and I enjoy her soft whimpers as I tease her peaked nipples. She arches into my touch needing more. The heat of her flaming pussy radiates through the fabric of my jeans, as she rocks against me. She makes me reckless. I want to be inside of her all day, fucking her on every surface in this house.

I want her to still feel me when I’m gone.

She grasps the hem of my shirt, but the jarring sound of my cell phone brings me back to reality.

“Don’t get it,” she groans.

“I have to,” I gently remove her from my lap, before getting up to answer it. “Okay, I’ll be there in twenty,” I place the phone in my pocket.

“Chase, I need to know what this is between us.” She mutters with glistening eyes.

“I don’t have time right now. We can talk tonight before I leave. Joey is outside. Don’t go anywhere without him.” She shifts from one foot to another, running her fingers through her hair.

“Chase, I don’t think I can do this.”

I brush a loose strand of her hair away from her face. We have so much to talk about. We haven’t even addressed the fact that she could be pregnant.

Everyone said I was strong when my brother died. People said I was brave for becoming a Marine. I try to be brave when it comes to protecting her, but I feel like a fucking coward when it counts.

“Look, I care, Melanie, I really do, but I can’t do this right now.”

She’s watching me, painfully, seeing me pull away emotionally once again. I can’t stand the pleading look on her face as she hugs her body tight. Why can’t I get my shit together, and just tell her how I feel about her? Why am I such a coward?

“Chase,” she mutters, stepping toward me.

“Joey is ex-military. Promise me you won’t go anywhere without him. I have to go.” I tell her before storming out the door without saying goodbye.
