SHE LOVES ME?

It takes a moment for my dumb, intoxicated brain to start working before it tells me to go after her. I’m an idiot for thinking I could stay away. I can’t let this woman go—she’s the best thing I’ve ever had in my life.

I stand unbalanced, cursing the bottle of Jack sitting next to me. I spot her darting toward the exit with Joey and her friend Gabby in tow.

I can’t let her leave.

“Melanie!” I shout across the bar, making everyone’s head turn. I don’t care. She stops and spins around, giving me a quick glance before continuing out the door.

I make my way outside quickly as possible, and I’m stopped in my tracks when Joey stands in front of me, squaring his shoulders and puffing his chest. Melanie glares over his shoulder at me, and I feel like shit when I see the smeared mascara under her blue glistening eyes.

“What are you doing, Man?” Joey stands his ground.

“I need to speak to the lady, so I suggest you step aside.” I like this kid a lot, but I’m not letting anybody get in my way tonight.

“The lady wants to go home. Maybe you should do the same.”

“It’s okay, Joey.” Melanie places her hand on his shoulder, as I’m about to go ballistic on the kid. “Can you make sure Gabby gets home safely, please?”

“I’m not leaving you here alone when he’s clearly drunk off his ass,” Joey says without ever taking his eyes off me. This kid’s a real pain in my dick.

“I’m not drunk, asshole,” I growl.

“It’s okay, Joey. Chase will make sure I get home safe.” Melanie looks over at me for reassurance, and I give her a slight nod.

“I’ll make sure she’s safe…thanks for looking out.” I look joey in the eyes, trying to reassure him.

Reluctantly, he agrees after a few more seconds of a stare down contest. He attempts to lead her friend Gabby away, but she looks more inclined to stay for the show.

“Gabby, I’ll be fine, please. Go with Joey.” Gabby shoots her a wink before they both walk away.

Melanie gasps as her feet leave the ground when I lift her by the waist and throw her over my shoulder.

“What the fuck, Chase?” she shrieks with surprise as my hand connects with a sting against her ass cheek. I guffaw when she repays the smack on my butt. “Put me down,” she grunts, pounding her fists against my back as I haul her into the alley on the side of the bar.

I set her down and watch her chest rise and fall with rapid breaths in time with my heart. Her cheeks flush candy-apple-red when I push her against the cool brick wall. I watch as her surprised eyes transform into a dark and burning heat, just before my mouth captures hers.

“I’m sorry, baby. I’m an ass,” I say between kisses. “Please give me another chance. I can’t be without you.” I resume kissing her passionately, the way a woman should be kissed, with every fiber of my being.

Claiming her.

Possessing her.

I may not have said the words back to her, but I need her to know—without a doubt, how I feel about her.

Her body is rigid at first, but soon desire takes over. Looping her arms around my neck, she pushes up on her tippy toes and presses her body into me like she can’t get close enough. There’s no denying I’m in love with this woman, and I know, whatever happens, there will never be another for me. She pulls her lips from mine.

“Chase, we need to stop.”

“I know baby, we need to talk, and we will but—”

“No Chase, I need you inside me, and you’re not fucking me here against a brick wall.”

She presses her casted arm against my chest pushing me back a fraction and holds out the palm of her other hand.

“Keys.”

“You’re not driving —”
