IT’S THE DAY of the awards dinner, and I’m finally feeling a little better. I’ve been fighting this damn stomach bug all week and spent most of it lying on the couch watching Netflix.
Chase was supposed to take me to his parent’s beach house for a few days, but I just wasn’t up to it. He assured me he’d take me soon though, because I’m freaking in love with that place.
Gabby and I are getting ready at my house, while Chase had some business to take care of, so he’ll be picking us up soon.
“We should pre-game. Do you have any wine?” Gabby hollers from the bedroom, while I finish applying my make-up.
“There’s some in the fridge,” I call out to her from the bathroom as I slip into the dress Chase treated me to.
I’m feeling a little bloated, and hope it looks as good as it did when I tried it on at the store. I went with a sexy, jade-green evening gown, with backless crisscross spaghetti straps, but my favorite part is the thigh-high slit up the front.
“Damn girl, you look smoking hot.”
“I hope Chase likes it.” I refused to let him see it when we went shopping because I wanted to surprise him.
“You’re absolutely getting laid tonight. I’m so jealous.” I can’t help my grin.
“Here, I poured you some.” Gabby sets the wine glass in front of me, and I immediately feel sick to my stomach.
“God, no! Take it away, please.”
She scrunches up her face, looking at me intently. “Since when do you turn down wine?”
“I’ve been fighting a bug this week, and I don’t feel up to drinking yet.”
She glares at me with her arms folded, and I can see her wheels turning.
“Did you get your period yet?”
“Not yet.” I lower my head, squeezing my eyes shut.
“Oh shit, Mel.”
“Melanie!” Chase’s voice echoes through the house, saving me from any further interrogation.
“Be right out,” I screech, avoiding Gabby’s stern glare.
“You’re not getting off that easy. We’re talking about this later,” she mutters as I head for the door.
“Holy Fuck, princess!”
Butterflies vibrate in my stomach when I see Chase standing in my living room, gawking at me like he wants to eat me alive. I eye him up and down as he stands there looking devilishly handsome in his dark fitted charcoal suit. He’s wearing a black dress shirt with a black tie, looking like sex-on-a-stick.
“You’re stunning. I won’t be able to keep my eyes off you.” He walks over and gently fists my hair, forcing my head back.
Then he kisses me until I can’t breathe.
“Hi!” I say in a breathy voice, wanting to climb him from the way he has my body humming.
Gabby clears her throat behind us. “Wow. I feel like I’m watching a porno right now.”
“Hello, Gabriella, you look lovely tonight.” Chase walks over to her, with our hands still linked together, and gives her a quick peck on the cheek. “Are you ladies ready to go?”
“Let me just grab my purse from the bedroom.” Gabby seems flustered and makes a quick getaway, leaving us alone in the room.”
“Before we go, I want to give you this.” Chase stands in front of me and pulls out a velvet, rectangular box from the inside of his jacket.
“What’s this for?”
