“You’re pregnant,” I tease, knowing exactly what outraged response that will get me.

And she doesn’t disappoint. “What? No!” she almost yells. “Don’t even joke about that. I’m not ready for kids. Besides, have you forgotten our pact?”

The pact is a promise we made to each other when we were ten. We agreed to be pregnant at the same time so that our kids could become besties too. Back then, that seemed totally reasonable.

“I would never forget our pact. Given we thought I was pregnant, I would have thought Lex was trying his hardest already to knock you up.”

“There will be no knocking up for some time, you hear me? So you better get your contraception sorted out. Do me and you a favor and get the contraceptive shot this time. I’d like to avoid what we went through last time.”

“Good point. Don’t worry, I’ve learned my lesson. I’ll get a shot while Aiden is away. I’m not risking it again. Though Aiden wouldn’t try to get me pregnant on purpose without my consent.”

“No. From what you told me about him, he’s not like that,” Rhia agrees. “When will he be back?”

“Thursday. God, the next four and a half days will be the longest of my life.”

“Not necessarily,” she says before squealing so loudly into the phone, I have to hold it away from my ear. Okayyy. What’s going on?

“I’ll be seeing you in a couple of days,” Rhia excitedly tells me.

Wait? What?

“Yes, Lex has to be in Atlanta on Tuesday, and of course I’ll be coming along. We’ll be staying for five days.”

This time I squeal. Jumping off the bed, I do my little happy dance.

Can today get any better? Yeah, actually it could… if the doorbell rang and Aiden was back already.

But Rhia visiting… it’s the best possible news. And perfect timing too. With Aiden in Chicago for the first few days, I can fully enjoy my time with her without feeling guilty about neglecting my boyfriend.

Boyfriend… And there’s the goofy grin again.

“Will I meet the lovely Aiden?” Rhi asks.

“Yes, of course. You’ll meet him on Thursday night. God, I hope you like him, Rhi.Because I really, really do.”

“Don’t you worry your pretty little head. I already do. You sound the happiest I’ve heard you in years, hun.”

It’s Monday morning, and I’m on my way to the canine training center. I left half an hour early to give myself extra time in case I get lost. I programmed the satellite navigation for directions, but hey, I’ve got that wrong before, so I triple checked the address.

I’m nervous as hell. While I visited the center briefly last week, it was only to make introductions and have a look around. Today is officially my first day there, even though it’s only a half day with my training continuing this afternoon… weapon’s training. Can’t say I’m looking forward to that, but it might come in handy.

I spoke with Aiden early this morning when he rang me to wish me good luck for my first day, and by the time I was dressed and ready to go, I had a sunflower delivery accompanied with a box of chocolate to either help me steel my nerves or celebrate a successful first day this afternoon.

Seriously, that man makes me swoon.

My phone rings through the car’s Bluetooth system. My stomach jumps in excitement. I bet that will be Aiden again.

“Hi. Is this Riley James?” the female voice is on the other end asks.

Oh, that’s right. That’s me. I keep forgetting. “Speaking.”

“This is Emily from Doctor Raymond’s office. I’m ringing because you missed your follow-up appointment last Thursday.”

What follow-up appointment? Oh crap. I remember now. I was meant to see the doctor again after my hospital visit the week before to discuss my blood test results.

“Oh, I’m terribly sorry, Emily. I totally forgot. I was away on a company survival camp and had to leave my cell phone behind. I didn’t see the reminder.”

“Oh, that sounds like fun.” She chuckles.
