I take her face in my hands, gazing at her intently. She needs to understand all of us are going to keep her safe. I’ve never been happier for the friends I have or the work I do; together we can do this. It’s going to be a team effort.

Goose bumps break out all over her body as she lets out a long sigh.

“Ella, I won’t let anything happen to you! I’ll die first,” I tell her. But that only seems to make things worse.

She shakes her head. “I don’t want you to die for me. Your life is worth a lot more than mine. You bring so much good,” she says, a tear rolling down her cheek and I wipe it away with my thumb.

“No, lucida. My life is worth nothing without you in it.” And it surprises me how true that statement is. I’ve known her less than a month, but not having her in my life is unimaginable, especially now that she’s mine.

My lips close over hers and we both pour in every ounce of love that’s coursing through our souls into that kiss—I never want it to end.

“Everything will be all right,” I reassure her. “Come on now. I made us an omelet.”

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Ella

“Rhia,Rhia,Rhia,”Ichant happily.

I’m lying on the bed, grinning goofily up at the ceiling. I’ve been floating on a magic carpet since Aiden’s kisses woke me this morning.

He’s like a drug and I’m addicted.

I need my next fix. Having to wait almost five whole days until I can have him again… it’s going to be torture.

We didn’t sleep much last night, but I’m not the least bit tired. In fact, my excitement only seems to be growing.

“What?” my bestie asks, laughing.

“I can’t walk properly today,” I tell her proudly.

“What? Why not? Did you pull a muscle?”

“Noooo.” I laugh, stretching my body. I really am sore today… in the best way.

Then Rhia is finally on board with our conversation. “Oh my god, El,” Rhia squeals. “You slept with Aiden. I am so freaking excited. I didn’t think it would happen for a while yet.”

“Well, if it was up to him, it wouldn’t have happened for another five days, but I couldn’t wait that long,” I tell her, proud of myself for demolishing his self-control.

“Details, El. Give me details,” she demands, and I happily oblige, telling her all about the amazing night I’ve spent with my boyfriend. Because as of last night, that’s what he is.

Jeez, I love calling Aiden my boyfriend. I’m like a freaking teenager again.

Boyfriend, boyfriend, boyfriend—sorry, just had to say it again.

In the background I hear Rhia tell Lex the news and then there’s more squealing. Not from Lex of course, but from Rhia. Lex is not a squealer.

“It’s strange, you know,” I say to her when she’s back on the line. “I love thinking of Aiden as my boyfriend. With Tiero that thought never occurred to me,” I contemplate out loud.

“What do you mean?”

“I never saw Tiero as my boyfriend. In the beginning, he was an adventure, a hot-as-sin man I was having a holiday fling with… casual, nothing serious, even though my heart told me otherwise. I never saw a future for us because we were just too different, let alone the fact we lived in different countries. And after he kidnapped me, I only ever felt like a captive, despite him telling me he loved me and that we would get married.”

“Hmm,” Rhia hums thoughtfully. “Your subconscious knew… just like it does now. And it guides your choice of words. It makes perfect sense.”

I rub my chin thinking about that; Rhia is probably right.

“Holy cow, El. In all this excitement, I’ve totally forgotten to tell you my happy news.”
