This isn’t going anywhere. In my peripheral vision, I notice the lake and a pair of ducks wading out of the water. My intuition forces my next words. “What will you do when you squander the last chance? Come back as a duck?”

I’m not even sure why I said the last part, but it must have hit a nerve. I watch the blood drain from De Marco’s face. His grip on the gun wavers for a second before he shakes his head, determination returning to his face.

Have I found a weak spot? What was it… the threat of losing Ella? Blowing his chances?

God knows. It’s not something I can dwell on.

I need to get back to Ella.

My phone goes off again in my pants.

Fuck!

How am I going to get us out of this?

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Ella

Ipacethelengthof the hotel room. I’ve finished packing our things, and Ade should be back by now.

Where is he?

Something isn’t right. He always texts me if there are any delays, and he would do so especially today. So why is my screen blank?

I dial his number, but it rings out.

“…please leave a message,” his deep voice invites; hearing it makes me warm and fuzzy inside… and more frantic.

Has something happened to him? Did those men follow us to the hotel after all, and we didn’t notice?

My gut tells me the Italians we saw were Tiero’s men. And if his men are here in Brazil, it stands to reason that Tiero is too.

The way my body was heating earlier… it was him. Tiero was nearby.

Oh god! What if it was him who was watching me?

He would have seen me with Aiden.

No. No. No. No. No.

My hands fly to my face in horror.

Did he see Aiden and me kiss? Or…

The blood drains from my head as I touch my engagement ring and twist it so the diamond is out of sight.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Tiero would feel so betrayed. Guilt cleaves me in two.

What have I done?

I never intended to hurt him.

Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. Aiden is as good as dead.

I need to find him—NOW!
