I was hanging on to the hope that my body’s reaction had a different explanation.

The goons don’t turn but keep walking up and down outside. I’m surprised there aren’t any inside. Maybe there are fewer men with Tiero than we first thought.

But they must have Aiden, because he’s nowhere to be seen. And if they do, his life is in danger. I need to find him!

Where could they be?

Think, Ella, think.

Tiero has a tendency to just march into any room in any establishment, and this being a hotel, there’s probably plenty of empty rooms. But the walls are too thin; people might hear.

He needs a place where there aren’t witnesses… perhaps out the back where guests don’t go?

I spot a door with a sign “Employees Only;”I’m drawn to it. I carefully open the door and peek through. The corridor is deserted and leads to a glass door. It’s unguarded… perhaps it’s not the right way after all? But the scorching heat in my body tells me otherwise.

Once more, I run, afraid to get caught if I walked slow. By the time I reach the door, I’m out of breath, my heart frantically beating against my chest. How am I so unfit? I step outside and am immediately confronted by a wave of humidity. Fuck, I’m already close to fainting, and these temperatures aren’t helping.

I look around. There’s a little forested area by a lake to my left and open gardens to my right. I follow the path to my left, but as I want to avoid being seen, I jump in between trees like some super spy. Perhaps I’m trying to channel Lex?

I hear voices not far off, and I stop in my tracks.

Italian accent, deep timbre… I’d recognize it anywhere. Not a moment later, Aiden’s voice is there too. I can’t make out what they’re saying, and I can’t see them yet. I need to get closer.

Ever so carefully, I study my surroundings. It’s safe to assume there are goons hanging about somewhere. Carefully I forge forward, staying hidden as best as I can.

And then I see them.

My heart stops, and my vision is bombarded with flashing stars.

I grip the tree I’m hiding behind to stop myself from falling and take steadying breaths to find some calm. It’s not working.

Oh please, God, please don’t let this be real.

The two men I love are standing some twenty feet apart, pointing their guns at each other.

My heart is in my throat as my hands fly to my face, covering my mouth.

I’m frozen in place, watching in horror as the scene unfolds.

Didn’t I know this day would come?

Tiero promised he would always come for me… and now he has.

I clutch my chest, my heart hurting so much, I can’t breathe.

My gaze goes to Tiero. Fury rolls off him in violent waves.

Fuck! He has seen us together. Why would he point a gun at Aiden otherwise?

Please don’t shoot Aiden! Please!

My eyes go to my fiancé. Determination screams in his posture… determination to protect me. He’s prepared to die for me.

No! Just no! I can’t let that happen.

My heart can’t take this. It’s shattering into a million pieces.

But I can’t focus on myself. I have to do something.
