“But that would give away that we saw this,” I point out.

“I don’t care. Serves them right for not turning it off properly.”

We put the camcorder in the bag and the lock back on. Riley returns it to the backseat. Then we sit in silence for a moment.

I have to admit I’m somewhat aroused by the unexpected interlude. Is it the same for Riles? It got my blood pumping and pooling in my lower half. She’s so close. Her chest is rising and falling rapidly. Sheisaffected by this as well.

A dark lock has fallen into her face, and I can’t resist. I raise my hand and rub the strand between my fingers before tucking it behind her ear, grazing her soft skin with my knuckle. Her hair is so silky. The urge to slide my hand to the back of her head, bury my fingers into her soft curls and pull her toward me is burning me up inside.

The need to taste her lips is overwhelming, but I don’t dare look at them. It would be my undoing. I clench my hands into fists to keep them from following through with my desires.

Not yet, not yet. Don’t freak her out.

But she doesn’t appear freaked out. She looks as lost to the moment as I am.

The depth of her green eyes swallows me up. I wonder what color they actually are. No one has eyes quite that green. But no matter if they’re gray, blue, or brown, I know they would suck me out of myself anytime, anywhere.

The air crackles. Tension hangs heavy between us.

It would be so easy to lean over and…

No, Aiden. You’ve only just met her.

Has this ever happened to me so fast?

Riles looks over at me, and I can tell she’s nervous. I guess it’s not every day she gets to experience homemade farm animal role-play porn with a relative stranger on the way to her new apartment. I feel closer to her, and I think it’s the same for her.

I clear my throat and break the silence and our moment. “We better get back on the road.” I start the car once Riley is buckled up and pull back out onto the road.

“Do you think that’s how Sue broke her arm?” I ask.

“During horse play, you mean? Yeah, maybe.” Then Riles taps her finger against her lips, pondering something. “It must be great to be that sexually liberated that you can dress up as your favorite farm animal and have kinky sex with your husband. The trust those two must have in each other to be able to voice and act on their deepest desires…”

She doesn’t finish the sentence. There’s a hint of melancholy in her voice, making me wonder what kind of experiences she’s had. She strikes me as someone fairly innocent. And if I had to guess, I’d say she hasn’t had many sexual partners. But today is not the day to find out about that.

So I change the subject. “Do you know horse names are usually derived from the names of the parents? Perhaps Muff Diver’s mother was Hairy Muff, and her father was say, Skin Diver. If she had siblings, they could be called Hairy Diver, and Skin Muff, actually Skinny Muff sounds better.”

“I wonder why she chose Muff Diver and not Carpet Muncher?” Riles giggles.

“Or Beaver Eater,” I offer.

“Do you think she actually sleeps on the hay?” Riles asks. It’s something I wondered too.

“Who knows. But it does sound like Muff Diver and Major Bona take ‘rolling in the hay’ literally. These two came well prepared,” I say, trying to keep a straight face.

“I bet that’s what was in the carry-on.”

“What, hay?”

“No!” She rolls her eyes at me. “The rest of their riding gear.”

Raising her voice over the weather, she relates how angsty Sue got when she was about to put one of their luggage pieces into our car.

“I wonder if this horse show was the real reason they went to Chicago? Perhaps they do dressage with their friends,” I ponder out loud.

A room or better still, a stable full of dressed-up horse people. What a sight that would be!

“With a name like Muff Diver, do you think Sue is batting for both teams?” Riley ponders.
