“Just drink your drink and let Papa Doug handle the situation,” he said.

“Papa Doug? How many nicknames do you have?” Kim asked.

“How many stars are there in the sky, darling? Oh! She’s replying!” He paused, then read out: “I don’t have an HD television. But your ass looks very sharp on my iPad. And then she sent a winky face! I repeat, we’ve got a winky face!”

Everyone erupted in laughter and jeers. Double-D slid the phone back across the booth and raised his hands in the air victoriously.

“Dougie Smooth strikes again! Now she’s thinking about your ass, buddy!”

“Thanks,” I muttered as I read the screen. Although I never would have sent that to her, I couldn’t help but smile at the response. And the winking emoji. She was being flirty for sure.

But what about her boyfriend? Maybe they weren’t doing so great. At trivia night, they didn’t seem like they had any real chemistry. He was more focused on the trivia game than on Taylor, and the two of them hardly touched each other in any affectionate way.

Maybe I have a shot with her after all, I thought as I ordered another round. I just need to play my cards right.
