Page 31 of A Return For Ren

He had a clean slate to decide the next step with Zara. The one he thought he could get by with one conversation the other day.

Yeah...stupid thoughts again.

He’d told himself he wanted to win her back. To see where they could go now, but he wasn’t being realistic in that he still thought he’d go back home.

He had to get those ideas out of his head. It wasn’t going to happen.

If he wanted it bad enough, he was going to have to take that step and return.

It might be easier to do knowing that nothing was holding him back other than Zara.

Measuring Stick

Zara was trying not to stress over Ren coming today with Max.

She was glad that she’d talked to Poppy and Rose on Saturday and got their opinions and thoughts on what was going on.

It was exactly what she needed.

In her mind, she’d lived without Ren Whitney in her life for years. She could go on living without him too. Or so she thought.

But him being back in town made her take a bigger look at her life and why none of her relationships with men had lasted.

She was looking for what she’d had with him years ago but with someone else.

It wasn’t right.

She shouldn’t have that measuring stick.

She couldn’t seem to put it down though.

The fun the two of them had when they were younger.

He was always too serious. Her not so much.

They complimented each other the way a couple should do.

She made him laugh. She made him see his life wasn’t as horrible as he thought it was.

Yeah, she knew that he didn’t always get along with his father. She’d heard the stories and witnessed the interactions too. Maybe not as horrible as he’d said, but her parents had made comments before that Ryan Whitney wasn’t an easy man to get along with.

He hardly smiled. He didn’t go out of his way to have a conversation unless it was about business. And he wasn’t warm or fuzzy.

Tess, Ren’s mother, was the opposite. The times Zara had gone to the Whitney house, Tess made her feel welcome. She talked to her about life and her plans and girl things. Ryan was normally working or in another room of the house by himself.

It wasn’t the life she’d had and maybe she should have opened her eyes more and listened to what Ren had been telling her. Or try to see what he felt.

Deep down, she thought he was overreacting about never coming back. His parents were paying for his education, so it didn’t seem like they werethatagainst it.

She was wrong though. Ren made her see that in the harshest way.

Now he was back. His life was upside down and spinning in every direction.

Hers wasn’t. It was normal. Level. Calm.

Until Ren walked in her door a week ago today.
