Icouldn’t believe it!

I twizzled the delicate green stem as I held it up to my face, making sure I was seeing it right.

One, two, three, four…

Wow.

A real, four-leaf clover.

I dropped onto my knees and laid back on the lawn, listening to the birds chirping as the sun beat down on my face. It was a perfect day, and now something amazing was going to happen to me.

What could it be?

Ice cream for dinner was at the top of my list.

Ooh, no!

Cake for breakfast.

I reached up and tucked the stem into my braid to make sure the clover gods could see it and know that they had to send a little good luck my way.

How extremely lucky to have found it.

There wasn’t another patch of clover on this lawn as far as I could see.

Maybe I’d get a pony. I lived in the city, but surely that didn’t matter to the powers of the clover. It could make anything happen.

Suddenly, a shadow cast over my face and blocked out the sun, interrupting my thoughts.

I opened my eyes, shielding them from the brightness that radiated around the shape that was blocking my light. I squinted.

What the hell?

Then I realized who it was. Aidan.

“What doyouwant?” I snapped, glaring at him.

It was boys like Aidan O’Callaghan that made me eternally grateful I was an only child. I felt bad for my best friend, Bree, having him as a brother.

He was slightly older than me, enough to push him into the grade above me, but not enough to make the superior smirk he always wore on his face right.

His face twisted into a scowl as he looked down at me. “Your parents want you to go inside.”

“I didn’t realize you’d been downgraded from prince, to errand boy,” I said dismissively, shutting my eyes again. There was no way I was taking orders from a boy.Especiallyhim.

He was always picking legs off spiders and kicking the heads off dandelions. He was wicked because he could get away with it. Because when he grew up, he’d do a lot worse to real people.

I shuddered.

Sometimes I forgot what the adults that surrounded me were like.
