I didn’t know everything, but I knew enough. I knew the people I loved were not good people.

I supposed I should cut Aidan some slack. It wasn’t his fault he’d been born to be a criminal… but he needn’t have started so early.

The shadow loomed closer and I felt his stubby fingers at my hairline. My eyes shot open in time to see him pluck the four-leaf clover out of my braid.

“What are you doing?” I gasped, my hand reaching too late to protect it.

He said nothing, he just smirked at me and tore one of the leaves off of the clover and let it flutter to the ground.

“No!” I shrieked, diving onto my knees to fumble through the grass. I wasn’t sure why I was trying to find it. It wasn’t like I could stick it back together, but it seemed too tragic to let something so special rot in the grass.

He stood over me, letting out a dark chuckle as he screwed up the rest of the clover in his palm and dropped it. Then he walked away.

“I hate you, Aidan O’Callaghan!” I screamed, tears stinging my eyes.

“Back at you,Clover,” he called over his shoulder, still laughing.

I looked down at the grass miserably.

He’d taken my once in a lifetime shot at luck…

It was that moment that I declared Aidan O’Callaghan, my best friend’s brother, my arch nemesis.

CHAPTER ONE

Cait

Aged 17

Damn him.

I watched as he swept his slightly too long hair out of his face, a wide grin fixing the girl he was leaning over in place against the lockers.

She giggled, biting her bottom lip, her eyes flickering from his face to the wide chest that she was inches from.

Urgh.

“What are you staring at?” My best friend appeared at my side, and I jumped, my cheeks burning with embarrassment.

Do not get caught hate staring at Aidan.

That was the number one rule. It wasn’t usually hard. He irritated me beyond belief. I didn’t know how anyone could stand to be around him for more than thirty seconds.

Bree followed my gaze across the school corridor, landing on her brother and his latest conquest.

“He’s got another girlfriend.” My mouth curled around the word girlfriend like it was an unpleasant taste in my mouth. It was.

“I doubt it will last. It never does. He’s just so gross.” She turned away to stuff some books in her locker, not noticing the way my eyes traced every line of her brother with disdain. Thankfully.

“Yeah,” I agreed, not really meaning it. Aidan O’Callaghan, heir to the Irish Mob, and my best friend’s brother, was anything but gross. I hated him, but I couldn’t deny how good looking he was. If you were into the illegally tattooed, burly brute type… which I most definitely wasn’t. At all.

“Hey, you wanna come over after school again? Mom made these killer brownies after you left last night, and I need a model to sketch.”

“Can’t you get your brother to help?” I loved Bree, but I really needed a night on my own. Spending another night this week in close proximity to Aidan was not what my stress levels needed. Plus, I had a mountain of homework to catch up on.

“He is, I need two people. I’m working on depth an-” I didn’t hear anything else after that. I opened my mouth to decline her offer, but at that exact moment, Aidan glanced over, his vivid green eyes meeting my stare.

My pulse spiked erratically.
