Jesus.

My muscles hurt from lying in the same position for a while, although I had no idea how long it had been. I remembered being shot. I remembered seeing the gun and seeing Salvatore’s hand moving towards it. In that moment, all I could think of was that I had to warn Aidan.

I’d been running before the shot had been fired, and that was the last thing I remembered.

Obviously, I wasn’t dead. I wouldn’t be in this much pain if I was.

I glanced over to the side of my bed, relieved that my eyes had adjusted and spotted a figure curled up in the chair.

Aidan.

I smiled as my husband’s too big body twitched in the chair, his muscles fighting the confinement of the stiff arms.

He must be exhausted.

I wasn’t sure how long I’d been asleep, but the stubble on his face was the same length as I remembered it from the funeral, so it couldn’t have been long, which meant this was the first time he’d slept since our honeymoon.

Jesus.

What a shitty first few days of marriage.

I laid back and let him sleep for a while longer, drifting in and out myself before the pain in my abdomen got so bad it was hard to breathe.

There was a button near my hand on a wire, I figured that was to call the nurse. I didn’t want to wake Aidan, but I was going to go mad if I had to deal with the searing in my abdominal muscles for much longer.

I pressed the button and within moments, a nurse opened the door.

“Everything okay?” She asked. I put my finger to my lips, gesturing to Aidan sleeping, but her entrance had already woken him.

He leapt out of his chair, startled. “What’s going on?” His eyes flashed around the room, finally landing on me.

“Cait,” he breathed. “You’re awake.”

I nodded, biting the inside of my cheek.

“Looks like your painkillers need to be replenished,” the nurse said, moving to where a stack of drips were hanging.

“Yes please,” I gasped, feeling the urge to curl up into a ball to escape it.

“I’ll be right back,” she said.

“Cait, are you alright?” The concern in Aidan’s voice had emotion clogging my throat.

“I think I will be,” I bit out between gritted teeth. His frown deepened.

Jesus Christ.

I didn’t remember it hurting this much when the bullet had actually ripped through me.

Thankfully the nurse returned a few moments later and hung a new bag. After a few minutes, the pain started to ease and I could finally relax.

“The doctor will be in shortly,” she told us as she tapped something into my electronic chart. “I’ve let her know you’re awake.” And with that she left us to it.

“I’m sorry, Aidan. I didn’t mean to scare you like that,” I sighed when she left, luxuriating in the feel of the drugs working their way through my veins and washing out the pain.

I knew he’d be mad about the fact I’d jumped in front of a bullet. I knew he’d be terrified to lose me.

Perhaps now he’d finally realize that I was sticking around.
