“Yeah, well, I can yell at you later,” he muttered gruffly. “For now, I’m just so fucking glad you’re okay.” He squeezed my hand and I smiled.

“Did you get Salvatore?”

He nodded once.

“So, we’re safe?”

This time he shook his head. “No, Cait. We will never be safe. Not as long as we’re here. Not as long as I’m in charge of the fucking mob.”

He swallowed hard, raising his gaze to mine.

“What?” I pressed.

“That’s why we’re leaving?” He finished, finally.

“Leaving?” I frowned. How could we leave?

He perched on the edge of the bed, leaning in close to me. “I’m done with it. All of it. I don’t care what my father wanted… I just want us to be able to live out our lives in peace.”

My mouth dropped open.

I was about to ask for more details when a pretty young doctor walked in. She smiled at Aidan, slightly too widely.

I narrowed my eyes. I’d never been the jealous type. He’d never given me a reason to be, and from the flat smile he shot back in her direction, he wasn’t starting now.

“Hi, I’m Dr. Monroe, Dr Wilmur is unfortunately on another call so she asked me to come and check in on you.”

“We’re happy to wait for Dr Wilmur,” Aidan said, not an ounce of friendliness in his tone.

“She will be several hours,” Dr Monroe replied, a frown forming between her brows.

“Fine,” Aidan muttered.

“Now, Miss Malley, how’re you feeling?” She asked, reaching for the bottle of hand sanitizer at the end of my bed.

“It’s Mrs. O’Callaghan, actually,” I told her abruptly.

Shit.

It was the first time I’d called myself that.

I was a wife… it still hadn’t sunk in.

“Oh yes, Dr Wilmur mentioned that you two recently tied the knot. Congratulations.”

“Thank you,” I answered.

She approached the opposite side of the bed to Aidan and gently pressed on my abdomen. Luckily, thanks to the drugs, I barely felt it. “How’s the pain?”

“Fine when this is going,” I gestured to the dripping bag attached to the line on my hand.

“Well, you’re going to experience a lot of discomfort in the next few days, but there’s no reason to think you can go home in about a week or so.”

“I’ll make a full recovery?” I knew that Ella had received a similar injury and it had prevented her having kids.

“Yes, there should be no long-term effects. Just some scarring which we’d recommend treating with a Vitamin E oil to reduce the appearance.”

I let out a big sigh of relief.
