From her, that would be agony.

“I know. Because I’ll keep fighting you.” She shot me a sideways smirk, and I couldn’t ignore the relief I felt. She might not admit it out loud, but she liked this back and forth we had. She felt the same thrill I did… I knew it.

I smiled back at her, relaxing in the chair. She was quiet for a while, but when she spoke next, there were tears in her eyes.

“Do you know how they died?”

I chewed on my cheek. I wasn’t sure I should tell her or not. Cady and Jessica’s deaths hadn’t been pretty.

“They were shot, then… stabbed.” They’d been gutted also, but she didn’t need to know that part.

She choked out a horrible sound, and dissolved into tears, folding into herself.

Shit.

I jumped across the room, landing on my knees next to the tub. “I’m sorry, Cait. Maybe I shouldn’t have told you,” I mumbled as I pulled her into an awkward one-armed hug. Her foamy skin soaked my shirt, but I didn’t care.

“No, no,” she pushed me away, scrubbing at her face. “I asked… I needed to know.”

“The ME said the shot killed them. It was quick. They didn’t suffer.” I wasn’t sure if that would be a comfort or not.

She nodded, blinking back tears. “God, I’m so sick of crying,” she muttered.

“I think crying is normal in your situation, Clover. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

“What about you? Why aren’t you crying? You’ve lost as much as I have.”

“They haven’t found them yet. I don’t know anything for sure,” I replied, and she gave me a look that I could only describe as pity. She thought I was in denial. I supposed I was a bit. There was next to no chance they were still alive.

Quinn…

No. Don’t think about it now. Focus on Cait.

I sat back on my heels. “Are you ready to get out?” I asked in an effort to change the direction of the conversation.

“I’d like to wash my hair.”

“Alright, I’ll wait outside.” I got to my feet, pressed a kiss to her head again and left the room.

Why did I keep doing that? I was sure she’d push me away every time, but she never did.

The maids had delivered Cait’s food and a big gallon jug of water with a glass and a metal straw on a tray. I lifted the silver dome to see what the chef had prepared for her. Simple chicken broth.

Good idea. Light on the stomach.

She’d probably struggle to eat solids for a while.

I moved to where the driver had dropped her bags and pulled them up onto the bed, grabbing a set of comfortable looking pajamas and a pair of underwear, laying them out for her. I wasn’t sure if she wore underwear with pajamas, none of the girls I’d ever been with had stuck around long enough for me to find out what the norm was.

Oh well.

She could just toss them back in the bag if she didn’t…

Then I’d have to go back to my room knowing she was na-

Stop it you giant pervert.

Minutes later, the bathroom door opened and she exited. She crossed over to me wrapped in a towel, a sheepish look on her face.
