“I’m going after those bastards,” he spat, snatching another pistol. His breaths were jagged like broken glass.

“Aidan-”

“A kid? Who does that to a kid?”

I approached him slowly, conscious of the fact he had a loaded weapon in his hands and he was trembling so hard it wouldn’t have been difficult to accidently pull the trigger. “Aidan, look at me.”

“I’m going to avenge her. I’m going to avenge your parents…” He kicked the door of the safe, and it smashed into the wall. “Shit,” he hissed as pain most likely shot up his leg.

“Aidan-”

“I’m going to put a bullet in their heads and then I’m going to gut them like-”

“Aidan!” I finally grabbed his wrist and pulled him around to face me. He was twice as big as me, but his distress left him unfocused. His eyes fell on me, and I almost recoiled at the violence in them. If he went after anyone like this, he’d get killed before he even made it through the door.

He was too angry. Too distracted.

“What?” He sighed, softening slightly.

“You need to think about this rationally. You need a plan…” I reached for the gun with the hand that wasn’t holding his arm, but his free hand swamped mine. He was much stronger than me, but he didn’t try to hurt me.

“You’re not going to stop me, Cait. If I die, I die. At least it’s for a good cause.”

No.

If he died, how would I live with myself?

He was all I had left in this world.

No. No. No.

Panic coursed through my veins, tightening my chest.

He couldn’t leave me.

Suddenly, I knew what I had to do. I couldn’t stop him with brute strength, but I could lie. It made me uncomfortable to lie to him, but I had no choice.

“Okay. Okay. But you have to let me drive. You can’t do this alone.”

“Absolutely fucking not. There’s no wa-”

I gripped his wrist tighter, shaking it to get my point across. “They were my parents, Aidan. I deserve blood and I deserve to be the one to spill it.”

His eyes studied mine, trying to pull any shred of fear he could use against me, but he wouldn’t find any. I wasn’t afraid of the Italians. I was only afraid of losing him.

“Alright, you can come,” he finally said. “But you’re staying in the car. You’re not coming within a foot of those men.”

I wasn’t sure how he thought we were even going to find them. Cullen’s men had been working for days to try and uncover the hiding spot of the assassins… but Aidan wasn’t thinking rationally. It didn’t matter. I just needed to get him away from here.

“Aidan-” I started, but he dropped the gun back in the safe and slipped his free hand into my hair, his fingertips gripping my skull so I had to look at him.

“Promise me, Cait. Promise.” He was so close to my face, our breaths mingling. He could have kissed me. I thought for a moment he would, but when he didn’t move towards me, I let out a sigh.

It was an easy promise to make. I wasn’t taking him to the killers.

“Okay. I just need to go and grab my jacket.” I eyed the cherry red mustang I knew belonged to him. “How much gas does that thing have?”

“Full tank.”
