Of course. That makes more sense.

“Well, then a war we will give them,” Carrick piped up from in the corner. I didn’t really disagree with him.

Cait was still in my arms, and there was no way I was pulling away. Like always, she was the only thing that helped me breathe through the panic.

“No, we can’t do that. Even if we all start fighting over territory and killing each other again, they won’t give her back. They will just kill her. She’s the trigger. The longer peace remains, the longer they’ll keep her alive.”

“And keep chopping bits of her off,” I snapped. I felt like I was about to explode, so this time I did release Cait. I didn’t want her to be in the blast zone when I finally went off.

His face soured. “Maybe. Which is why we need to find that boat, now.”

“I kind of like my daughter with all of her pieces together,” Dad snapped, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he started to pace.

I wished I could get in his head. I wished I could know what he was thinking. If he was planning on reigniting the war, then I needed to get Cait somewhere safe. I’d fly the fucking plane myself if necessary.

She was tracking Cullen’s pacing with that same anxious look, and I burned with the need to hide her away from all of this.

“She can live without a few fingers or an ear. She would never forgive any of us if we started a war over her.”

“Enzo is right,” Cait suddenly said, her voice cracking. “Brianna wouldn’t want the treaty to go to waste. She would put anyone above herself.”

“Most of the guys were happy with the arrangement, but if Holden orders them to attack your men, they will, without hesitation.” Holden was Tommy Valente, the New York Boss’ son. Tommy had seemed on board with the treaty at the club, but now some of them were rebelling. “Your guys need to be ready for that, and they can’t fight back. The second one of our guys is killed or injured by one of yours, the treaty will be over. So, I’d suggest telling everyone to stay inside. Batten down the hatches, because they will try anything to goad you.”

I tuned out again while they argued, my fists flexing restlessly at my side. If they were going to come at us directly, getting the men to stand back and do nothing was going to be a real challenge.

Dad’s voice broke through my thoughts as he turned to me. “Do as he says. Get everyone to lock up and get inside, and alert Brady, Garret, and Cian. We will need Brady’s sniper eye with us.”

“Yes, Sir.” Carrick left with Jerry, and Dom and Chris filed out too.

I turned to Cait, my lungs ablaze with the need to tell her to run and hide in some other corner of the globe. I was petrified that something would happen to her. The way Enzo looked… it wasn’t a good fucking feeling knowing your girl was out there all alone, possibly injured, possibly dead.

“You’re to stay here. Okay?”

She opened her mouth to argue, but I didn’t want to hear it. I drank in all her features… the clear blue of her eyes. The cute, rounded tip of her nose. The curve of her lips. I fucking loved her… I…I gripped her face and pulled her towards me, sweeping a kiss across her lips before she could stop me.

She pulled back, glaring at me. After what I’d said at her apartment, I was sure that was the last thing she’d been expecting from me.

I hadn’t really been expecting to do it.

“Not the time,” she whisper snarled, looking anxiously at Dad… but he wasn’t paying attention. Enzo was though.

Oh well.

I was pretty sure we could trust him… or at least Cait could. He wouldn’t throw her under the bus.

I shot her one last smile and turned away. We could go back to our regularly scheduled hatefulness when I got my sister back.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Three Weeks Later

Cait

Come on, Bree. Wake up.

I clutched my best friend’s hand… the one that wasn’t wrapped up in bandages after she’d been forced to use her elbow to break through glass that was inches thick and shattered all the bones in her arm.

The past three weeks since we’d found her floating in the water had been hell. She’d managed to escape her captors and their boat, but her injuries had been extensive. From what we could tell, she’d broken her arm breaking a cabin window, and had then tried to swim to shore, where the monsters who’d taken her then shot her in the head.
