When Enzo had pulled her from the water, we’d been sure she was dead, but somehow she’d clung on. We’d rushed her to the hospital where she’d spent hours in surgery and had been in a coma ever since.

One of us had always been at her bedside… everyone except Enzo. It still bothered me that he’d disappeared…

“When you wake up, I was thinking you could come with me on my next trip. I’m heading out to Bali again to review a new hotel and-”

“She can’t hear you, you know,” a voice chuckled from behind me. I twisted in my chair, scowling at the intruder.

“You don’t know that,” I snapped, turning back to face Bree. Even in her bruised and bandaged state, she was still better to look at than her brother.

He’d worn a smug look around me ever since the night of Bree’s kidnapping… he’d kissed me, and I didn’tnotkiss him back…

Why had he kissed me? Just hours after warning me to get out of town? He flipped from hot to cold in a nanosecond and it left my head in a complete spin. At the time I’d been more concerned about finding my best friend than keeping my distance from him. It seemed like we’d immediately fallen back into each other as soon as something bad had happened. We were like each other’s emotional crutch… but as soon as the storm cleared, and day broke on the horizon, it was back to glares and snippy comments.

God, I wished he would just vanish back to wherever he’d been for the last ten years, but so far, he seemed to be sticking to his word.

“Well, you look sound like a fucking idiot,” he muttered, leaning against the wall.

“Are you five?” I hissed, jumping out of my chair. Why did he have to be like this? Bree was fighting for her life… if ever there was a time for us to cease fire it was now. But no. Aidan had to just keep pushing.

“No, but you’ve got five minutes to get out of this hospital room.” He pushed off of the wall and approached me slowly. I rolled my eyes, turning my back on him.

Asshole.

But then I felt his heat behind me, his body against mine. He slipped a hand around my throat, pulling me against his chest as he leaned in to whisper in my ear. “You’ve got five hours to pack your shit up, and five days to find a corner of this fucking planet where I’ll never find you.”

What the fuck!

My body screamed at me to fight him, to protect myself, but I was frozen. “Run, run, run as fast as you can, Little Clover…” he singsonged in a voice that sent shudders down my spine as he mimicked running with his fingers over my shoulder. “Understand?”

Was he threatening me?

I’d never been scared of Aidan, not truly… but now…

He was so close to me, I could hear each violent breath in my ear, brushing over my skin. His fingers bruised my throat, and I could feel the edges of my vision getting blurry with tears.

Still, I didn’t pull away.

I ordered my body not to, but it ignored me, and I trembled… slick heat forming between my legs.

How was this the time to get turned on by him?

My cheeks burned as I felt that familiar twist of desire deep in my stomach.

But suddenly the door opened and we shot apart like two marbles that had been slammed into each other.

“Oh good, you’re both here,” Cullen muttered.

I gasped in a breath, my hand flying to my throat to cover up the finger marks that had no doubt started to form there, but Cullen wasn’t paying attention to us, as usual.

He made his way around to the other side of Bree’s bed and placed a kiss on the small patch of skin on her forehead that wasn’t bandaged.

“Cait was just leaving,” Aidan snapped, folding his arms and returning to lean on the wall.

“Look, I forgot that I’d told the board from your mother’s charity that they could use the house for their fundraising event tonight. With everything going on it slipped my mind,” he told Aidan.

“I’m sure they’d understand why you have to cancel,” I interjected softly. Cullen had really been through the wringer, and I was starting to worry about him. He looked paler every time I saw him.

“Cancel? No, we’re not cancelling. This is Molly’s legacy. No. I need you two to be there to host. It starts at seven.”
