“Just trust that I’ll tell you what you need to know.” I traced my way from her wrist up to her hair, tangling my fingers in the soft golden strands.

“Who are you to fucking decide what I need to know?” She growled, pushing away from me and jumping to her feet. She took the blanket with her, wrapping it around her shoulders like a cape. “You’re not my keeper, Aidan, and if you think that is how our marriage is going to be, then the wedding is off.” She turned on her heel and left the room.

No.

My heart pumped once more before it dropped to my stomach, sending bile sloshing up my throat.

No. I couldn’t lose her.

No.

I leapt up, following her to the bedroom.

She was half undressed in the bathroom, shower heating up and glared at me as I intruded.

“Get out of here, now.” She planted a hand on my chest and tried to push me toward the door, but I was nearly twice her size.

I gripped her wrist, pulling her against my chest. “Cait-”

“No, I mean it. Get out. We’re done.”

“You’re not fucking breaking up with me the day before our wedding.”

She didn’t mean it. We were both under an immense amount of stress, that toxicity was bound to start leeching out somewhen. She just wanted to punish me. She wanted to make me sweat… and I wasn’t ashamed to admit it was working.

“Watch me.” She struggled in my grip, but her bare chest was now brushing against mine and I wasn’t blind as to what the friction was doing to her.

“Cait-”

“How can I trust you if you won’t be honest with me? What else do we have?”

“I can think of one thing,” I said, my voice husky as my body also sat up and took notice of her lithe form against mine.

“Aidan!” She smacked me hard in the chest, struggling harder, but there was no way I was letting her go. “Aidan, that’s not enough, and you know it.”

“It’s enough for me.”

“Well, it’s not for me.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Do you literally just want to marry me so you can fuck me? Because you can just pay someone for that and it will save you a lot of hassle.” She finally broke free of my hold, turning away.

“Don’t walk away from me, Cait.” I snapped, reaching out to grab her again, but she must have sensed what I was about to do, because she spun on her heel and got in my face.

“I should have walked away from you a long time ago, Aidan. But here we are, still having the same fight. Because I’m weak. I’m dumb.” She reached for the ring on her left hand, swiping it off of her finger. “But not anymore.”

“Put that fucking ring back on.” I seethed. I’d never been so fucking raging mad, and scared at the same time.

“Tell me the truth.”

“Just fucking trust me, Cait. Why is that so hard?”

“Because you keep giving me reasons not to!” All of the fight seemed to leave her body, her eyes growing mournful. It was like a slap in the face.

“Cait, come on.”

“No, Aidan. You need to leave. We’re done.” She turned away from me, rubbing her temples.
